Effectiveness of proper management of external ventricular drainage to prevent the risk of central nervous system infection in newborns with hydrocephalus

Abstract

It was a systematic observational and retrospective review, the search has been restricted to articles with full text, subjected to critical reading, using the Grade evaluation to identify their level of evidence; of the 10 scientific articles reviewed, they were 40% (4/10) Systematic reviews: United States 20%, Australia 10%, Spain 10%; then 10% (1/10) Study Cohort: United States 10%; 10% (1/10) Quasi-experimental: Brazil 10%; and 40% (4/0) studied cases and controls: Netherlands 20%, United States 10%; India 10%. The systematic review allows us to show that the management of external ventricular drainage is effective in preventing the risk of infection of the central nervous system in newborns with hydrocephalus; For this reason, it is important to update knowledge about the management of these drainages and, on the other hand, achieve greater excellence in our professional performance.

Fue una revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectiva, la búsqueda se ha restringido a artículos con texto completo, sometidos a una lectura crítica, utilizando la evaluación de Grade para identificar su grado de evidencia; de los 10 artículos científicos revisados, fueron el 40% (4/10) Revisiones sistemáticas: Estados Unidos 20%, Australia 10%, España 10%; luego el 10% (1/10) Estudio Cohorte: Estados Unidos 10%; el 10% (1/10) Cuasi experimental: Brasil 10%; y el 40% (4/0) estudio casos y controles: Holanda 20%, Estados Unidos 10%; India 10%. La revisión sistemática nos permite evidenciar que el manejo del drenaje ventricular externo es efectivo para prevenir el riesgo de infección del sistema nervioso central en recién nacidos con hidrocefalia; por ello es importante actualizar los conocimientos sobre el manejo de estos drenajes y por otro lado, alcanzar una mayor excelencia en nuestro desempeño profesional.
