Knowledge and Attitudes about COVID-19 in Norbert Wiener University Dental Students in 2020.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes towards COVID-19 among dental students at a private university during the pandemic. Methodology: A quantitative approach was used, applying a descriptive and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 256 preclinical and clinical students who were administered a questionnaire virtually via Google Forms. Prior to its application, the instrument was validated through expert judgment and a pilot test, achieving a Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.81. Results: The findings indicated that 67.2% of the students had a moderate level of knowledge about COVID-19. Regarding their attitudes towards COVID-19, although 84.8% felt more likely to get infected and transmit the virus to their families, 78.5% believed that COVID-19 had impacted their university education, 92.6% felt the need to acquire more knowledge on the subject, and 79.7% reported positive attitudes towards the impact of the disease on their educational and professional life. Conclusion: The majority of the students displayed a moderate level of knowledge about the disease and reported positive attitudes towards the impact of the disease on their educational and professional life.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar el nivel de conocimientos y las actitudes sobre el COVID-19 que presentan los estudiantes de odontología de una universidad privada durante la pandemia. La metodología utilizada fue la cuantitativa, de tipo aplicada y con un diseño descriptivo y de corte transversal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 256 estudiantes de cursos preclínicos y clínicos a quienes se les aplicó de manera virtual un cuestionario mediante un Formulario Google. Antes de aplicar el instrumento, fue validado mediante un juicio de expertos y posteriormente con un piloto, obteniendo un coeficiente de confiabilidad Alfa de Cronbach de 0,81. Los resultados indican que el 67,2% presentan un nivel medio de conocimientos sobre COVID-19. . En cuanto a las actitudes de los estudiantes ante el COVID-19, a pesar de que el 84,8% se sienten más propensos de infectarse y de contagiar a sus familiares, el 78,5% piensa que el COVID-19 ha afectado su educación universitaria, el 92,6% cree que necesita adquirir más conocimientos sobre el tema, el 79,7%.Se concluye que la mayoría de estudiantes presentan un nivel medio de conocimientos sobre la enfermedad y refieren actitudes Positivas frente al impacto de la enfermedad en su vida educativa y profesional.
