Relationship between temporomandibular disorders and partial edentulism in patients attending the dental center of the Norbert Wiener Private University - Lima, 2023

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and partial edentulism in patients attending the Dental Center of the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener in Lima in 2023. A quantitative approach was adopted, using a hypothetical deductive method, and an observational, correlational, non-experimental, cross-sectional research design. The study sample consisted of 169 partial edentulous patients attending the Dentistry department. The results indicated that 34.1% of female patients had mild TMD, while 20% of male patients had the same diagnosis. Additionally, 9.4% of adult women and 1.2% of adult men presented moderate TMD. In the elderly group, 8.2% of women and 6.5% of men showed mild TMD. Furthermore, a smaller proportion of younger patients, specifically 2.4% of women and 0.6% of men, displayed normal function. These results establish a statistically significant relationship between temporomandibular disorders and partial edentulism in the patients treated at the Dental Center of the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener in Lima in 2023

La investigación tuvo como objetivo, determinar la relación entre los trastornos temporomandibulares y el edentulismo parcial en pacientes que acuden al Centro Odontológico de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener en Lima en 2023. Se optó por un enfoque cuantitativo y se aplicó un método hipotético deductivo, empleando un diseño de investigación observacional correlacional, no experimental y transversal. La muestra de estudio estuvo constituida por 169 pacientes edéntulos parciales que acuden al área de Odontología. Los resultados indican que el 34,1% de los pacientes son mujeres adultas con un trastorno temporomandibular (TTM) leve, mientras que el 20% son hombres adultos con el mismo diagnóstico. Además, se encontró un 9,4% de mujeres adultas y un 1,2% de hombres adultos con TTM moderado. En el grupo de adultos mayores, el 8,2% y el 6,5% respectivamente presentaron TTM leve. Por otro lado, una proporción menor de pacientes jóvenes, específicamente el 2,4% de mujeres y el 0,6% de hombres, mostraron una función normal. Estos resultados establecen una relación estadísticamente significativa entre los trastornos temporomandibulares y el edentulismo parcial en los pacientes tratados en el Centro Odontológico de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener en Lima en 2023.
