Level of knowledge about dental management of patients with diabetes mellitus in students of the 9th and 10th cycles of the dentistry school of the Private University Norbert Wiener, Lima 2018

Abstract

This research was conducted at the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener with the aim of determining the level of knowledge about the dental management of diabetic patients in students of the 9th and 10th cycles of the School of Dentistry. The study was observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 86 students from the 9th and 10th cycles, both male and female. To determine the level of knowledge, Castillo's (2014) survey was used, which was validated by expert judgment. The instrument consisted of 20 closed-ended questions, which were categorized as: low, regular, and high. The results showed that 62% of students had a low level of knowledge, 25% had a regular level, and 13% had a high level. It was also found that the female gender had a higher level of knowledge compared to the male gender, and students over the age of 25 had a low level of knowledge. This shows that the level of knowledge does not necessarily increase with age. It is concluded that there is a low level of knowledge about the dental management of diabetic patients in students from the 9th and 10th cycles of the School of Dentistry at Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, and that training courses on this topic should be implemented.

La presente investigación fue realizada en la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, tuvo como objetivo determinar el nivel de conocimiento sobre el manejo odontológico del paciente con diabetes mellitus en estudiantes de 9° y 10° ciclo de la Escuela de odontología. El estudio fue observacional, descriptivo y de corte transversal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 86 estudiantes de 9° y 10° ciclo entre mujeres y varones. Para determinar el nivel de conocimiento se utilizó la encuesta de Castillo (2014) que fue validado mediante juicio de expertos, el instrumento constaba de 20 preguntas cerradas y los calificó como: bajo, regular y alto. En los resultados el 62% de los estudiantes tuvo un nivel de conocimiento bajo; el 25% tuvo un nivel de conocimiento regular y el 13% tuvo un nivel de conocimiento alto. También se encontró predominio en el conocimiento del género femenino respecto al de género masculino y los estudiantes mayores de 25 años obtuvieron un conocimiento bajo, esto demuestra que no necesariamente el nivel de conocimiento aumenta al pasar de los años. Se concluye un bajo nivel de conocimiento sobre el manejo odontológico del paciente con diabetes mellitus en estudiantes de 9° y 10° ciclo de la Escuela de odontología de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener y que se debe implementar cursos de capacitación sobre el tema.
