Evaluation of the photography of smiling profile in the orthodontic photography protocol

Abstract

In orthodontics, photographs play a very important role as they aid in diagnosis. The standard photographic protocol typically includes intraoral and extraoral photographs; however, the profile smile photograph is often overlooked. Only a few prescriptions, such as that of Dr. ANDREWS, rely on the profile smile photograph to evaluate the position of the central incisor and obtain a better perspective of the clinical case. The objective of this study was to evaluate a clinical case using both a smile profile photograph and one without a smile. Four profile photographs without a smile were shown to experienced orthodontists, who provided their perspective on the case. After fifteen days, the same four photographs of the patients, but with a smile, were shown for comparison. The results indicated that using the profile smile photograph revealed more findings and details in the perception of the clinical case. It allowed for better analysis of the position of the upper central incisor, the relationship of the lips, and the harmony of the maxillae. Therefore, it is suggested to incorporate the profile smile photograph into the conventional orthodontic photographic protocol.

En ortodoncia, las fotografías juegan un papel muy importante, ya que ayudan al diagnóstico, dentro del protocolo fotográfico que habitualmente registramos incluye las fotografías intra y extraorales, mas no se toma en cuenta la fotografía de perfil en sonrisa. Solo algunas prescripciones se apoyan en la fotografía de perfil en sonrisa como es la del Dr. ANDREWS, según esta filosofía implementa esta fotografía para evaluar la posición del incisivo central y tener una mejor perspectiva del caso clínico.

El presente estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar el caso clínico utilizando una fotografía de perfil en sonrisa y otra sin sonrisa. Para ello se mostró cuatro fotografías de perfil sin sonrisa a ortodoncistas de experiencia para que den su perspectiva del caso y después de quince días se mostraron las cuatro fotografías de los mismos pacientes pero con sonrisa, para luego comparar las percepciones. Dando como resultado que utilizando la fotografía de perfil de sonrisa se encuentra mayores hallazgos y más detalles en la percepción del caso clínico, pues se puede analizar la posición del incisivo central superior, la relación de labios, la armonía de los maxilares, es por ello que se sugiere implementar la fotografía de perfil en sonrisa en el protocolo fotográfico ortodóntico convencional.
