Effectiveness of breastfeeding in the mother-infant dyad for the long-term prevention of type II diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Objective: Systematize the evidence about the effectiveness of breastfeeding in the mother-child binomial for the long-term prevention of Type II Diabetes Mellitus. Materials and Methods: Systematic Review that synthesizes the results of multiple investigations. The search was restricted to articles with full text, using the GRADE system. In the selection, 10 articles were chosen, finding that 40% (04) correspond to Europe, 20% (02) to North America, 10% (01) to Central America, South America, Asia and Oceania, these in their The majority are systematic reviews (40%), cohorts (30%), systematic reviews and meta-analysis (20%) and cohort and meta-analysis (10%). Results: 80% of the reviewed articles found effectiveness in breastfeeding during 6 months exclusively in the long-term protection of type II diabetes mellitus in the Mother Child binomial, while the other 20% reveal that there is no evidence on the effectiveness of breastfeeding. Conclusions: The effectiveness of breastfeeding in the Mother Child binomial for the long-term prevention of type II diabetes mellitus was evidenced in eight of the reviewed investigations; however, two of the pieces of evidence indicate that it is not effective.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias acerca de la efectividad de la lactancia materna en el binomio madre niño para la prevención a largo plazo de la Diabetes Mellitus tipo II. Materiales y Métodos: Revisión Sistemática que sintetiza los resultados de múltiples investigaciones. La búsqueda fue restringida a artículos con texto completo, utilizando el sistema GRADE. En la selección se eligieron 10 artículos, encontrando que el 40% (04) corresponden a Europa, 20% (02) a América del Norte, 10% (01) a Centro América, América del Sur, Asia y Oceanía, estos en su mayoría son revisiones sistemáticas (40%), cohortes (30%), revisiones sistemáticas y meta análisis (20%) y cohorte y meta análisis (10%).Resultados: El 80% de los artículos revisados encuentran efectividad en la lactancia materna durante 6 meses en forma exclusiva en la protección a largo plazo de la diabetes mellitus tipo II en el binomio Madre Niño, mientras que el otro 20%, revela que no existe evidencia sobre la efectividad de la lactancia materna. Conclusiones: Se evidenció en ocho de las investigaciones revisadas la efectividad de la lactancia en el binomio Madre Niño para la prevención a largo plazo de la diabetes mellitus tipo II, sin embargo, dos de las evidencias indican que no es efectiva.
