Cancer facing strategy and quality of life in cancer patients treated in the medical oncology outpatient service of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital, Lima - 2023

Abstract

Cancer is a challenging disease, but with the right coping strategies, patients can improve their quality of life and cope with the challenges of the disease. Each person is a unique entity; therefore, each one copes differently with the events that occur in his or her life. In this research the objective is "to determine how the coping strategy to cancer is related to the quality of life in cancer patients". The methodology is based on the hypothetical-deductive method, applied with quantitative approach and non-experimental correlational cross-sectional design; there will be a finite population whose sample by convenience is constituted by 120 new patients with oncological diagnosis during the fourth quarter of the year 2023; to whom the survey will be applied, with the questionnaires of the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (MAC) (31 items) of Watson et al, 1988), modified by (Trigoso, 2009) (31), to measure the coping strategies and the Functional Assessment for Cancer Treatment scale (FACT-G-4) (31), to measure the coping strategies and the Functional Assessment for Cancer Treatment scale: General (FACT-G-4) (27 items), Cella et al, 1993, developed to measure quality of life in oncology patients. The ethical principles of research and the Helsinki declaration are respected. The data will be tabulated with the SPSS 25 program and Spearman's Rho will be used to determine if there is a relationship between the two variables.

El cáncer es una enfermedad desafiante, pero con las estrategias de afrontamiento adecuadas, los pacientes pueden mejorar su calidad de vida y hacer frente a los desafíos de la enfermedad. Cada persona es un ente único; por lo mismo, cada uno afronta de forma diferente los acontecimientos que se presentan en su vida. En esta pesquisa el objetivo es “determinar cómo la estrategia de afrontamiento al cáncer se relaciona con la calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos”. La metodología es a base del método hipotético deductivo, aplicada con enfoque cuantitativo y diseño no experimental correlacional de corte transversal; se contará con una población finita cuya muestra por conveniencia estará constituida por 120 pacientes nuevos con diagnostico oncológico durante el cuarto trimestre del año 2023; a quienes se les aplicará la encuesta, con los cuestionarios de la Escala de ajuste mental al cáncer (MAC) (31 Ítems) de Watson et al, 1988), modificada por (Trigoso, 2009) (31), para medir las estrategias de afrontamiento y la escala de Evaluación funcional para el tratamiento del cáncer: general (FACT-G-4) (27 ítems), Cella et al, 1993, elaborada para medir la calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos. Se respetan los principios éticos de la investigación y la declaratoria de Helsinki. Los datos se tabularán con el programa SPSS 25, se usará el Rho de Spearman para determinar si existe relación entre las dos variables.
