Efficacy of the psychoeducation program to reduce relapses and improve treatment adherence in patients with bipolar disorder

Abstract

Objective: Systematize evidence on the effectiveness of the psychoeducation program to reduce relapses and improve treatment adherence in patients with bipolar disorder. Material and methods: Systematic observational and retrospective review subjected to critical evaluation that summarized the results of multiple scientific articles of high quality of evidence found in the databases; PubMed, Scielo, ESCO and Scopemed. Of the 10 scientific articles reviewed, 60% (n=6/10) are randomized controlled trials and 40% (n=4/10) are systematic reviews, they come from countries such as; Brazil, United Kingdom, Türkiye, Singapore, Iran, Australia and Spain. On the other hand, the search was established as long as the full text of the scientific article of interest was accessed. Results: The evidence found (10/10) shows the effectiveness of the psychoeducation program to reduce relapses, in terms of adherence to the treatment of bipolar disorder (6/10) articles, show a significant improvement after psychoeducation, other benefits found were an increase in lithium levels in the blood, lower frequency and days of hospitalization, and improvement in the social functioning of users with bipolar disorder with psychoeducation. Conclusion: The psychoeducation program is effective in reducing relapses in bipolar I and II disorder, and also promotes adherence to treatment.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias sobre la eficacia del programa de psicoeducación para reducir las recaídas y mejorar la adherencia al tratamiento en pacientes con trastorno bipolar. Material y métodos: Revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectiva sometida a evaluación critica que resumió los resultados de múltiples artículos científicos de alta calidad de evidencia hallados en las bases de datos; PubMed, Scielo, ESCO y Scopemed. De los 10 artículos científicos revisados 60% (n=6/10) son ensayos controlados aleatorizados y 40% (n=4/10) son revisiones sistemáticas, proceden de países como; Brasil, Reino Unido, Turquía, Singapur, Irán, Australia y España. Por otra parte, estableció la búsqueda siempre y cuando se tuvo acceso al texto completo del artículo científico de interés. Resultados: Las evidencias encontradas (10/10) muestran la eficacia del programa de psicoeducación para reducir las recaídas, en cuanto a la adherencia al tratamiento del trastorno bipolar (6/10) artículos, muestran una mejora significativa posterior a la psicoeducación, otros beneficios encontrados fueron el aumento de niveles de litio en sangre, menor frecuencia y días de hospitalización, y mejoría en el funcionamiento social de los usuarios con trastorno bipolar con psicoeducación. Conclusión: El programa de psicoeducación es eficaz para reducir las recaídas en trastorno bipolar I y II, y además favorece la adherencia al tratamiento
