Evaluation of the state of gingival health of patients using orthodontic fixed appliances treated in three dental centers

Abstract

Gingival health is crucial for the initiation of the alternatives offered by the specialty of dentistry, which is responsible for maintaining the integrity and completeness of the dental organs, with the main function being the union of the tooth to the bone. Fixed orthodontics is one of the alternatives aimed at providing an aesthetically pleasing smile in harmony with the maxillary structures and the teeth, often presenting periodontal pathologies due to the accumulation of dental biofilm around orthodontic appliances and poor oral hygiene.

This study aimed to determine the gingival health of patients with fixed appliances in three dental centers in Lima in 2021. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted. The sample consisted of 100 patients (57 females, 43 males), whose gingival health was evaluated using the Loe and Silness index, and their oral hygiene habits were assessed through a hygiene questionnaire consisting of 9 questions. The results showed that 31% of the patients had mild gingival conditions, 66% had moderate gingival conditions, and 3% had severe gingival inflammation. According to the hygiene questionnaire, 94% had regular hygiene habits and 6% had poor hygiene habits. Conclusion: Gingival issues are associated with poor oral hygiene habits, caused by the accumulation of dental biofilm and inadequate oral hygiene products, leading to bleeding and other issues that affect oral health.

La salud gingival es de gran importancia para el inicio de las alternativas que ofrece la especialidad de odontología, encargada de sostener los órganos dentales de manera intacta y completa, teniendo como función principal la unión con el diente al hueso; siendo la Ortodoncia fija una de las alternativas que tiene como finalidad proporcionar una sonrisa agradable con apariencia física en armonía con las estructuras del maxilar y las piezas dentarias, presentando en ocasiones patologías a nivel del periodonto por acumulación del Biofilm Dental ante los aparatos ortodónticos y deficiencia de higiene oral.

El presente estudio tuvo como finalidad determinar la salud gingival de los pacientes con aparatología fija en tres centros odontológicos en la cuidad de lima 2021. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo – transversal, con enfoque cuantitativo; cuya muestra estuvo constituido por 100 pacientes (57 mujeres 43 hombres) a quienes se les evaluó la salud gingival mediante el índice de Loe Silness, así mismo el hábito de higiene oral mediante un cuestionario de higiene conformado por 9 preguntas. Cuyos resultados mostraron que 31% de los pacientes evaluados presentaron una condición clínica gingival leve; 66% presentaron condición gingival moderada y 3% inflamación gingival severa. De acuerdo al cuestionario de higiene los resultados mostraron que el 94% tuvo un hábito de higiene regular y 6% malo. En conclusión, las afectaciones gingivales se asocian a un hábito de higiene oral deficiente; causado por la acumulación del Biofilm Dental, complementos de higiene oral no adecuados, causando presencia de sangrado entre otros afectando su salud oral.
