Effectiveness of occupational therapy in the cognitive deterioration of older adults with Alzheimer's

Abstract

Objective: Analyze and systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of occupational therapy in the cognitive deterioration of older adults with Alzheimer's. Materials and Methods: The design was an observational systematic review. The sample was made up of ten articles that met the selection criteria. The search was carried out in a high-impact database, using keywords and Boolean operators in the search. Results: Of the ten articles reviewed, 3/10 (10%) belong to the Asian continent (Republic of Korea). 5/10 (50%) were systematic reviews, 2/10 (20%) were randomized trials, 2/10 (20%) were longitudinal cohort designs, and 1/10 (10%) were experimental. 8/10 (80%) studies obtained significant favorable results, while 2/10 (20%) did not obtain significant results. The relevant factors to demonstrate the effectiveness of occupational therapy were the duration and number of therapies, likewise, it is necessary to individualize the type of therapy in the patient according to the degree of cognitive impairment. Conclusions: The studies reviewed show the effectiveness of occupational therapy in the cognitive deterioration of older adults with Alzheimer's.

Objetivo: Analizar y sistematizar las evidencias sobre la efectividad de la terapia ocupacional en el deterioro cognitivo del adulto mayor con Alzheimer. Materiales y Métodos: El diseño fue revisión sistemática observacional. La muestra estuvo conformada por diez artículos que cumplieron los criterios de selección. La búsqueda fue realizada en base de datos de alto impacto, utilizando las palabras claves y operadores booleanos en su búsqueda. Resultados: De los diez artículos revisados, 3/10 (10%) pertenecen al continente asiático ( República de Corea ). 5/10 (50%) fueron revisiones sistemáticas, 2/10 (20%) fueron ensayos aleatorizados, 2/10 (20%) fueron diseños de cohorte longitudinales y el 1/10 (10%) fue experimental. 8/10 (80%) estudios obtuvieron resultados a favor significativos, mientras que el 2/10 (20%) no obtuvieron resultados significativos. Los factores relevantes para evidenciar la efectividad de la terapia ocupacional fueron la duración y el número de terapias, así mismo, es necesario individualizar el tipo de terapia en el paciente según el grado de deterioro cognitivo.
