Emotional intelligence and empathy in nursing interns at Norbert Wiener University, Lima – 2021

Abstract

The objective was to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and empathy in nursing interns at the Norbert Wiener University, Lima-2021. Materials and methods: The present study was approached from the quantitative approach, its design was correlational-cross-sectional. The sample was made up of 73 participants. The data collection technique was the survey and the instruments used to measure the main variables were the TMMS-24 and Jefferson empathy scales. Results: Regarding the relationship between emotional intelligence and empathy, it was found that there is no significant relationship (p>0.05) between both main variables; Regarding the relationship between emotional intelligence in its emotional perception dimension and empathy, it was obtained that there is a weak positive significant relationship (p<0.05); Regarding the relationship between emotional intelligence in its dimension, understanding of emotions and empathy, it was found that there is no significant relationship (p>0.05); Finally, regarding the relationship between emotional intelligence in its emotion regulation dimension and empathy, there is no significant relationship (p>0.05).

El objetivo fue determinar la relación entre la inteligencia emocional y empatía en internos de enfermería de la Universidad Norbert Wiener, Lima-2021 Materiales y métodos: El presente estudio fue abordado desde el enfoque cuantitativo, su diseño fue el correlacional-transversal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 73 participantes. La técnica de recolección de datos fue la encuesta y los instrumentos empleados para medir las variables principales fueron las escalas TMMS-24 y empatía de Jefferson. Resultados: En cuanto a la relación entre la inteligencia emocional y empatía se obtuvo que no existe una relación significativa (p>0,05) entre ambas variables principales; en cuanto a la relación entre inteligencia emocional en su dimensión percepción emocional y empatía se obtuvo que si existe una relación significativa positiva débil (p<0,05); en cuanto a la relación entre inteligencia emocional en su dimensión comprensión de las emociones y empatía se obtuvo que no existe una relación significativa (p>0,05); finalmente en cuanto a la relación entre inteligencia emocional en su dimensión regulación de las emociones y empatía no existe una relación significativa (p>0,05).
