Emotional intelligence and empathy in nursing students at a higher health technology institute in Lima, 2018

Abstract

Objective: Determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and empathy in nursing students at a Higher Technological Institute of Health in Lima, 2018. Materials and methods: Quantitative approach, descriptive-correlational, non-experimental and cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 588 nursing students. The survey technique was used to collect the data. The Emotional Intelligence Scale instrument “TMMS – 24” created by Fernández-Berrocal, Extremera and Ramos was used; and, to measure empathy, the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale (EEMJ) version E, translated into Spanish and created by Mohammadreza Hojat. Results: The relationship between the variables was evaluated using Spearman's statistical test (p: 0.318). It was shown that 62.4% of the students obtained a medium level of emotional intelligence; Regarding the dimensions, it was observed that 73.1% of the students obtained a medium level in the emotional perception dimension; 64.1% average level in understanding emotions; and 49.8% had a high level of emotion regulation; In relation to the empathy variable, the majority obtained a medium level with 80.6%; Regarding the dimensions, it was observed that 69.7% of the students obtained a medium level in the dimension ability to put themselves in the patient's shoes; 68.4% medium level in compassionate care; and 53.4% ​​average level in perspective taking. Conclusions: Emotional intelligence and empathy present a moderate directly proportional relationship in Nursing students at a Higher Technological Institute of Health in Lima. Emotional intelligence and empathy present a medium level.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre inteligencia emocional y empatía en estudiantes de enfermería de un Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Salud de Lima, 2018. Materiales y métodos: Enfoque cuantitativo, diseño descriptivo-correlacional, no experimental y de corte transversal. La población estuvo constituida por 588 estudiantes de enfermería. Para recolectar los datos se utilizó la técnica de la encuesta. Se utilizó el instrumento Escala de Inteligencia Emocional “TMMS – 24” creado por Fernández-Berrocal, Extremera y Ramos; y, para medir la empatía, la Escala de Empatía Médica de Jefferson (EEMJ) versión E, traducida al español y creado por Mohammadreza Hojat. Resultados: La relación entre las variables se evaluó mediante la prueba estadística de Spearman (p: 0,318). Se mostró que el 62,4% de los estudiantes obtuvieron nivel medio de inteligencia emocional; en cuanto a las dimensiones, se observó que el 73,1% de los estudiantes obtuvieron nivel medio en la dimensión percepción emocional; el 64,1% nivel medio en comprensión de las emociones; y el 49,8% nivel alto en regulación de las emociones; en relación con la variable empatía, en su mayoría, obtuvieron nivel medio con 80,6%; en cuanto a las dimensiones, se observó que el 69,7% de los estudiantes obtuvieron nivel medio en la dimensión habilidad para ponerse en el lugar del paciente; el 68,4% nivel medio en cuidado con compasión; y el 53,4% nivel medio en toma de perspectiva. Conclusiones: La inteligencia emocional y la empatía presentan una relación directamente proporcional moderada en los estudiantes de Enfermería de un Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Salud de Lima. La inteligencia emocional y empatía presentan un nivel medio.
