Occupational exposure and attitudes towards blood-borne pathogens in dental students of the Norbert Wiener Private University in Lima, 2022

Abstract

A basic methodology with a descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional non-experimental design was proposed. The instrument used was a questionnaire to assess 120 students in their final year at the School of Dentistry, Faculty of the Universidad Norbert Wiener. The results showed a significant relationship between occupational exposure and attitudes towards bloodborne pathogens (rho = 0.323 and p = 0.000); furthermore, a relationship was established between the number of exposures and attitudes towards bloodborne pathogens in students (rho = 0.295 and p = 0.001). A low correlation was found between the timing of exposure and attitudes towards bloodborne pathogens in dental students (rho = 0.227 and p = 0.013), and finally, a relationship was obtained between the nature of the wound and attitudes towards bloodborne pathogens in students (rho = 0.196 and p = 0.032). Therefore, it was concluded that there is a relationship between the studied variables.

Se planteó una metodología de tipo básico, con nivel descriptivo, correlacional y de diseño transversal – no experimental. En cuanto al instrumento, se utilizó un cuestionario con el que se evaluó a 120 alumnos que cursan el último año en la Escuela de Odontología de la Facultad de la Universidad Norbert Wiener. Como resultados, se encontró relación significativa entre la exposición ocupacional y actitudes frente a agentes patógenos transmitidos por la sangre (rho = 0,323 y p= 0,000); asimismo, se estableció la relación entre el número de exposiciones y actitudes frente a agentes patógenos transmitidos por la sangre en estudiantes (rho = 0,295 y p=0,001); por otra parte, se determinó una correlación baja entre el momento de la exposición y actitudes frente a agentes patógenos transmitidos por la sangre en estudiantes de Odontología (rho = 0,227 y p=0,013) y, por último, se obtuvo relación entre la naturaleza de la herida y actitudes frente a agentes patógenos transmitidos por la sangre en estudiantes (rho = 0,196 y p = 0,032). Por lo tanto, como conclusión se pudo confirmar que existe una relación entre las variables estudiadas.
