Frequency of subcutaneous emphysema with the use of the high-speed handpiece in retained third molar extraction in patients treated at the Central Military Hospital, Lima 2017

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of subcutaneous emphysema associated with the use of a high-speed handpiece in third molar extraction in patients treated at the Central Military Hospital, Lima, 2017. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective. The population consisted of 350 medical records from the Stomatology Department of the Central Military Hospital. A non-probabilistic sampling method was used, selecting 156 medical records of patients aged 18 to 25 who were treated during 2017 and underwent third molar extraction requiring osteotomy and odontosection with a high-speed handpiece, and had retained lower third molars classified as Pell & Gregory Class II. The results showed no subcutaneous emphysema with the use of the high-speed handpiece (0%). According to the variables studied, including gender, side, and cranial type, no subcutaneous emphysema was observed (0%). Therefore, it was concluded that no subcutaneous emphysema was observed with the use of the high-speed handpiece in third molar extraction.

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo determinar la frecuencia de enfisema subcutáneo con el uso de la pieza de mano de alta velocidad en exodoncia de tercera molar retenida en pacientes atendidos en el Hospital Militar Central, Lima 2017. El estudio fue descriptivo transversal y retrospectivo. La población fue de 350 historias clínicas del sistema de estomatología del Hospital Militar Central. La muestra se logró por medio de un muestreo no probabilístico establecido por 156 historias clínicas de pacientes de 18 a 25 años que fueron atendidos en el período 2017 , sometidos a cirugía de tercera molar retenida que necesite osteotomía y odontosección con pieza de alta velocidad y presencia de terceras molares inferiores retenidos en clase II de Pell& Gregory. Los resultados mostraron que no hay enfisema subcutáneo con el uso de la pieza de mano de alta velocidad (0%). Según nuestras variables que fueron el género, lado y tipo de cráneo no se presenció enfisema subcutáneo (0%). Por lo tanto, se concluye que no se apreció enfisema subcutáneo con el uso de la pieza de mano de alta velocidad en tercera molar retenida.
