Antimicrobial activity of dental pastes with and without triclosan on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 strains: comparative in vitro study, Lima 2018

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the antimicrobial activity of toothpaste with and without triclosan on Streptococcus mutans. The sample size was determined by sample size calculation, and the strain studied was of the ATCC 25175 type. The sample consisted of 40 Petri dishes, each with 4 wells of 5 millimeters in diameter, where 0.05 milliliters of toothpaste was placed, and the evaluation was done at 24 and 48 hours. The study was experimental in vitro. Data were evaluated using the SPSS v22 statistical package, employing the ANOVA test and Tukey’s multiple comparisons test. The results showed that toothpaste with triclosan exhibited an antimicrobial activity of 41.05 ± 3.58 mm on Streptococcus mutans at 24 hours and 39.75 ± 3.32 mm at 48 hours, while toothpaste without triclosan showed antimicrobial activity of 39.00 ± 4.05 mm, 37.8 ± 5.15 mm, and 39.15 ± 3.87 mm at 24 hours and 36.80 ± 4.14 mm, 35.85 ± 4.84 mm, and 37.45 ± 3.72 mm at 48 hours. It was also found that at 24 hours, toothpaste with and without triclosan did not present statistically significant differences. It is concluded that both toothpaste with and without triclosan are effective antimicrobial agents against Streptococcus mutans.

El presente trabajo de investigación tuvo por objetivo general determinar la actividad antimicrobiana de las pastas dentales con y sin triclosán sobre el Streptococcus mutans. El tamaño de la muestra se realizó por calculo muestral y la cepa estudiada fue de tipo ATCC 25175 la muestra fue de 40 placas petri a las que se le realizo 4 pozos de 5 milímetros de diámetro donde se colocó 0.05 mililitros de pasta dental, siendo evaluada a las 24 y 48 horas. El estudio fue de tipo experimental in vitro. Para la evaluación de los datos se utilizó el paquete estadístico SPSS v22, siendo empleado la prueba Anova y la prueba de comparaciones múltiples de Tukey. Los resultados evidenciaron que la pasta dental con triclosán presentó una actividad antimicrobiana de 41.05 ± 3.58 mm sobre el Streptococcus mutans a las 24 horas de exposición y 39.75 ± 3.32 mm a las 48 horas, mientras que las pastas dentales sin triclosán presentaron una actividad antimicrobiana de 39.00 ± 4.05, 37.8 ± 5.15 y 39.15 ± 3.87 mm sobre el Streptococcus mutans a las 24 horas y 36.80 ± 4.14, 35.85 ± 4.84 y 37.45 ± 3.72 mm a las 48 horas de exposición. Así también se encontró que a las 24 horas las pastas dentales con y sin triclosán no presentaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Por lo que se concluye que las pastas dentales con y sin triclosán son efectivas como agentes antimicrobianos sobre el Streptococcus mutans.
