Use of coping strategies and level of overload of the family caregiver of patients with schizophrenia of the 20 female ward of the Victor Larco Herrera Hospital - 2018.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between the use of coping strategies and the level of caregiver burden in relatives of patients with schizophrenia in the Pabellón 20 Women’s ward at the Víctor Larco Herrera Hospital – 2018. Materials and Methods: This research is quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional in design. The population consisted of 67 family caregivers whose patients were hospitalized in the mentioned institution. The instruments used were the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI), which measures the degree of use of eight coping strategies in stressful situations, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, which measures the level of caregiver burden. Results: A correlation exists between the use of coping strategies and the level of caregiver burden in family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. The Spearman correlation test yielded a correlation index of 0.146 (p < 0.05) and a significance index of 0.039. Among the most relevant coping strategy dimensions were: Desirability thinking (71.6%), avoidance of problems, and emotional expression (65.7%). Regarding burden, 35.8% experienced minimal and mild burden, while 28.4% had intense burden. Conclusions: A significant, directly proportional, and positive relationship exists between the use of coping strategies and caregiver burden. The most used coping strategy was desirability thinking, and most caregivers experienced minimal or mild burden.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre el uso de estrategias de afrontamiento y el nivel de sobrecarga del familiar cuidador de pacientes con esquizofrenia del pabellón 20 mujeres del Hospital Víctor Larco Herrera - 2018. Material y Método: La presente investigación es de enfoque cuantitativo de diseño correlacional y de corte transversal. La población estuvo conformada por 67 familiares cuidadores que tuvieron hospitalizadas a sus pacientes en la Institución en mención. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el inventario de estrategias de afrontamiento (CSI), que mide el grado de utilización de las ocho estrategias de afrontamiento en situaciones estresantes y la escala de sobrecarga del cuidador de Zarit, que mide el nivel de carga en labores del cuidador. Resultados: Existe una correlación entre el uso de estrategias de afrontamiento y el nivel de sobrecarga del familiar cuidador de pacientes con esquizofrenia, la prueba estadística de correlación de Spearman arrojó un índice de correlación de 0,146 (p < 0,05) y un índice de significancia de 0,039. Entre las dimensiones de las estrategias de afrontamiento más relevantes fueron: El pensamiento desiderativo 71,6%, evitación de problemas y expresión emocional 65,7%. En relación a la sobrecarga, se evidenció que el 35,8% presentan sobrecarga mínima y leve; y el 28,4% sobrecarga intensa. Conclusiones: Existe una relación directamente proporcional leve significativa positiva entre las variables Uso de Estrategias de Afrontamiento y Nivel de Sobrecarga del familiar cuidador. La estrategia de afrontamiento más utilizada fue el pensamiento desiderativo y la mayoría de los familiares cuidadores presenta sobrecarga mínima y leve.
