Family functioning and academic achievement in 5th grade secondary school students in two state educational institutions, Huanta – 2023

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between family functioning and academic achievement in 5th-grade secondary students from two public educational institutions in Huanta, Ayacucho. The research followed a quantitative, correlational approach with a non-experimental cross-sectional design, using the Family Cohesion and Flexibility Evaluation Scale – FACES III, adapted by Bazo et al. (2016), and the students' grade records. The results showed no significant correlation between family functioning and academic achievement (rho = 0.09; p > 0.17). Therefore, it was concluded that there is no direct relationship between family functioning and academic performance in these students.

El objetivo de la investigación ha sido determinar la relación entre el funcionamiento familiar y el logro académico en estudiantes del 5to grado de secundaria en dos instituciones educativas estatales, Huanta – Ayacucho. La investigación es de enfoque cuantitativo, nivel correlacional y diseño no experimental transversal; en el cual se empleó la Escala de evaluación de cohesión y flexibilidad familiar - faces III adaptado por Bazo et. al (2016) y la recolección del registro de notas de libreta, a 198 estudiantes del 5to grado de secundaria, turno mañana. Los resultados hallados evidencian que el funcionamiento familiar no se correlaciona significativamente con el logro académico (rho=0.09; p>0.17). En consecuencia, esto significa que los estudiantes que poseen un buen funcionamiento familiar o no, no necesariamente están relacionados cuando el alumno presenta dificultades en sus actividades académicas.
