Family violence and self-esteem in high school students of the educational institution José Carlos Mariátegui 6063, Villa El Salvador, 2023

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between family violence and self-esteem in secondary school students. A quantitative, basic, descriptive-correlational approach with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 187 students from José Carlos Mariátegui 6063 secondary school in Villa El Salvador. They were assessed with the Family Violence Questionnaire (CVIFA) and the Stanley Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory - School Form. The results indicated a significant inverse relationship (rho = -0.201), though with a very small effect size (r² = 0.004), between family violence and self-esteem. It was concluded that higher levels of family violence were associated with lower self-esteem, a situation that would be more evident if mediating variables such as loneliness or social anxiety were considered.

La investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la relación que existe entre violencia familiar y autoestima en los estudiantes de secundaria. La metodología utilizada fue de enfoque, cuantitativo, de tipo básica, nivel descriptivo – correlacional y diseño no experimental y transversal, siendo la muestra 187 estudiantes del nivel secundaria de la institución educativa José Carlos Mariátegui 6063 de Villa el Salvador, a quienes se les aplicó el Cuestionario de violencia familiar (CVIFA) y el Inventario de Autoestima Stanley Coopersmith - forma escolar. Los resultados indicaron que existe relación inversa y significativa (rho=- .201), aunque con tamaño del efecto muy pequeño (r2=.004), entre violencia familiar y autoestima en los estudiantes de secundaria de la institución educativa José Carlos Mariátegui 6063 de Villa el Salvador. Se concluyó que a mayor violencia familiar menor autoestima, situación que se haría más evidente si es que además se consideran variables mediadoras como soledad o ansiedad social
