Association of the neutrophil/lymphocyte index with the mortality of covid-19 patients at Hospital II Clínica Geriátrica San Isidro Labrador October 2020 – February 2021. Lima – Peru

Abstract

The neutrophil-lymphocyte index is a hematological marker previously studied for inflammation in various diseases. In COVID-19 infection, the NLR has gained significance for determining severity and predicting mortality in infected patients. This thesis seeks to associate the NLR with the mortality of COVID-19 patients at the San Isidro Labrador Geriatric Clinic, Lima, from October 2020 to February 2021. The study evaluated 180 patients diagnosed with COVID-19, using hematological values to determine the NLR and seek associations using SPSS. It found that 72.8% of deceased patients were male, with an average age of 76.1 years. The odds ratio was calculated, revealing that patients with an NLR >7 had a 9.7 times higher risk of death. The logistic regression analysis found that patients with elevated NLR had 1.5 times higher mortality risk (p: 0.000). It was concluded that NLR is a good predictor of mortality in COVID-19 infected patients.

El índice neutrófilo linfocito, es un índice hematológico antes estudiado como marcador de inflamación para diversas enfermedades. En la infección por Covid-19, el INL ha cobrado gran relevancia para la determinación de la severidad y predicción de la mortalidad en los pacientes infectados por este virus. Por ello la presente tesis busca asociar el índice INL con la mortalidad de pacientes covid-19 en el Hospital II Clínica Geriátrica San Isidro Labrador, octubre 2020 – febrero 2021. Lima – Perú, se evaluó a 180 pacientes con diagnóstico de covid-19 en el Hospital II Clínica Geriátrica San Isidro Labrador, se hizo uso de los valores hematológicos para la determinación del INL y se procedió a buscar asociación entre ambas variables mediante el programa estadístico SPSS, encontrando que el 72.8% de los pacientes fallecidos fueron hombres y la edad media fue de 76.1%. se determinó el Odds ratio, encontrando que los pacientes con un INL >7 tienen 9.7 veces más riesgo de fallecer, según la prueba de regresión logística binaria se encontró que el paciente con un INL elevado, tiene 1.5 veces más posibilidades de fallecer (p: 0,000). Se concluyo que el INL demostró ser un buen predictor de mortalidad en paciente infectados por covid-19.
