Evaluation of the reproducibility of the position of the upper central incisor with and without the Andrews six-element orthodontists' head frontal plane indicator device.

Abstract

The present study evaluated the reproducibility of the upper central incisor (ICS) position, with and without the head's frontal plane indicator device, by orthodontists using the 6 elements of Andrews in 2016. The type and level of the research was prospective, longitudinal, and descriptive observational. The sample consisted of 29 orthodontists trained in the 6 elements philosophy, who took measurements at two times, with a 3-month interval between T1 and T2, with and without the frontal plane indicator device. At T1, using the device, a mean of -0.05mm (SD 2.69) was obtained, with statistically significant differences (p=0.04); and without the device, a mean of 2.62mm (SD 1.41) was found, with statistically significant differences (p=0.00). At T2, using the device, a mean of -1.55mm (SD 2.85) was obtained, with statistically significant differences (p=0.00); and without the device, a mean of 1.07mm (SD 1.65) was found, with no statistically significant differences (p=0.82). Both evaluated with a Gold Standard with a mean of 1mm (SD 1). The average over time with the device at T1 was statistically equal to the average at T2 (p=0.048). The study concluded that the greatest reproducibility is achieved using the Head's Frontal Plane Indicator Device.

El presente estudio evaluó la reproducibilidad de la posición del incisivo central superior (ICS), con y sin el dispositivo indicador del plano frontal de la cabeza, por ortodoncistas de los 6 elementos de Andrews en el año 2016. El tipo y nivel de la investigación fue prospectivo, longitudinal y descriptivo de observación. La muestra estuvo conformada por 29 ortodoncistas capacitados en la filosofía de los 6 elementos, los cuales realizaron las mediciones en dos tiempos, con un intervalo de 3 meses entre T1 y T2, con y sin el dispositivo indicador del plano frontal de la cabeza. En T1 empleando el dispositivo se obtuvo una media de -0.05mm (DS 2.69), existiendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p=0.04); y sin el dispositivo presentó una media de 2.62mm (DS de 1.41), existiendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p=0.00). En T2 utilizando el dispositivo se obtuvo una media de -1.55mm (DS 2.85), existiendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p=0.00); y sin dispositivo presento una media de 1.07mm (DS de 1.65), no existiendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p=0.82). Ambos evaluados con un Gold Standard con media de 1mm (DS 1). El promedio en el tiempo con dispositivo en T1 es estadísticamente igual al promedio de T2 (p=0.048). Concluyendo que la mayor reproducibilidad se da utilizando el dispositivo Indicador del Plano Frontal de la Cabeza.
