Critical review: protective effect of breast milk for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis in low weight and/or premature babies under 37 weeks of gestation

Abstract

The research aimed to identify the protective effect of breast milk in preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in low-birth-weight and/or preterm infants under 37 weeks of gestation. The clinical question was: Does breast milk have a protective effect in preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in both male and female infants with low birth weight and/or preterm birth under 37 weeks of gestation? Evidence-Based Nutrition (EBN) methodology was used. Information was gathered from PUBMED, LILACS, SCIELO, REDALYC, and SCIENCE DIRECT, where 29 articles were found, and 10 were selected. These articles were evaluated using the CASPe critical reading tool. Finally, the meta-analysis titled "Impact of Human Milk on Necrotizing Enterocolitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" was selected, which has A1-level evidence and a strong recommendation grade. The critical review concluded that breast milk has a protective effect in preventing the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm and/or low-birth-weight infants under 37 weeks of gestation.

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo dar a conocer el efecto protector de la leche materna para la prevención de enterocolitis necrotizante en bebés con bajo peso y/o prematuros menores de 37 semanas de gestación. La pregunta clínica fue: ¿La leche materna tendrá efecto protector para la prevención de enterocolitis necrotizante en bebés de ambos sexos con bajo peso y/o prematuros menores de 37 semanas de gestación? Se utilizó la metodología Nutrición Basada en Evidencia (NuBE). La búsqueda de información se realizó en PUBMED, LILACS, SCIELO, REDALYC, SCIENCE DIRECT, encontrándose 29 artículos, de los cuales 10 fueron seleccionados, los mismos que han sido evaluados por la herramienta para lectura crítica CASPE, seleccionándose finalmente el Metaanálisis titulado “El Impacto de la Leche Humana en la Enterocolitis Necrotizante: Una revisión sistemática y un metaanálisis”, el cual tiene un nivel de evidencia AI y Grado de Recomendación FUERTE, de acuerdo al conocimiento de la investigadora.
