Performance of the Immunochromatography Test for Syphilis Used in Pregnant Women at a Maternal Care Center in Lima; August and September 2017

Abstract

This work contributes to the knowledge of clinical laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections. Its study is of great importance due to the conditions in which these infections are prevalent, such as promiscuity and prostitution, especially in urban areas. The Rapid Syphilis Test (RST) is a test for diagnosing the Treponema pallidum bacterium in blood, which is currently being used in clinical laboratories in our country and worldwide, so it was deemed appropriate to determine its performance.

A population of 909 pregnant women, vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and who regularly attend the maternal care center in Lima, was selected. A quantitative, retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study was conducted. Subsequently, blood samples were tested using the RST and FTA-ABS "EUROIMMUN" tests. The performance of the RST was then determined using formulas to calculate its sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and concordance using the Kappa index, with the FTA-ABS "EUROIMMUN" test as the reference test. The results indicate that the RST is sensitive and specific, with 100% concordance with the reference test, as well as its positive and negative predictive values, and the concordance by Kappa index was 1

El presente trabajo es un aporte al conocimiento sobre el diagnóstico de laboratorio clínico de las infecciones de transmisión sexual. Su estudio, es de gran importancia por las condiciones en que se viven, como la promiscuidad y la prostitución, sobre todo en las ciudades. Prueba rápida para sífilis (PRS), es una prueba para el diagnóstico de la bacteria Treponema pallidum en sangre, que está siendo utilizada actualmente en laboratorios clínicos de nuestro país y del mundo, por lo que se consideró conveniente determinar su desempeño. Se seleccionó una población compuesta por 909 gestantes, vulnerables, en lo que se refiere a infecciones de transmisión sexual y que acuden regularmente al centro de atención materno de Lima. Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, retrospectivo, de corte transversal y observacional. Posteriormente se efectuó las pruebas en las muestras de sangre, por medio de: PRS y FTA-ABS “EUROIMMUN”, luego se determinó el desempeño de PRS mediante fórmulas, determinando su sensibilidad, especificidad, valores predictivos positivo y negativo y su concordancia mediante el índice de Kappa, utilizando como prueba de referencia FTA-ABS “EUROIMMUN”. Los resultados obtenidos indican que la PSR, es sensible y especifico en concordancia con la prueba de referencia al 100%, al igual que sus valores predictivos positivo y negativo y la concordancia por índice de kappa fue 1.
