Effectiveness of alternative therapies to improve quality of life in oncology patients

Abstract

Objective: Systematize evidence on the effectiveness of alternative therapies to improve quality of life in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Systematic observational and retrospective review, recording relevant studies to answer specific questions. The search was limited to articles with full text, they were subjected to an analytical reading, assigning the strength of recommendation using the grade system. Results: In the search, 10 articles were chosen where 30% (03/10) are pre-experimental designs from Spain and Mexico, 30% (03/10) are systematic reviews from China and Peru, 40% (04/10) experimental study, meta-analysis, quasi-experimental and randomized controlled clinical trial from the countries China, Cuba and South Korea. 80% of articles affirm that alternative therapies are effective in improving quality of life, and 20% showed not so significant results, needing more and better research. Conclusions: 8 out of 10 investigations showed that there is effectiveness of alternative therapies, reducing anxiety, pain, fatigue and depression; and 2 of 10 investigations improve the quality of life in some of its aspects and in conjunction with other alternative therapies to be effective.

Objetivo: Sistematizar las evidencias sobre la efectividad de las terapias alternativas para mejorar la calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos. Materiales y Métodos: Revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectivo, registrando estudios relevantes para responder a preguntas específicas. La búsqueda se ha limitado a artículos con texto completo, se sometieron a una lectura analítica, asignando la fuerza de recomendación mediante el sistema grade. Resultados: En la búsqueda se eligieron 10 artículos donde el 30% (03/10) son diseños pre-experimentales de España y México, 30% (03/10) son revisiones sistemáticas de China y Perú, 40% (04/10) estudio experimental, meta-análisis, cuasi experimental y ensayo clínico controlado aleatorizado de los países China, Cuba y Corea del Sur. El 80% de artículos afirman que las terapias alternativas son efectivas para mejorar la calidad de vida, y el 20% mostraron resultados no tan significativos, necesitando mayor y mejor investigación. Conclusiones: 8 de 10 de investigaciones se evidenció que existe efectividad de las terapias alternativas, reduciendo la ansiedad, dolor, fatiga y depresión; y el 2 de 10 investigaciones mejora la calidad de vida en algunos de sus aspectos y en conjunto con otras terapias alternativas para ser efectivas.
