Impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients treated at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima 2021.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients attended at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima, 2021. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 93 patients aged 11 to 14 years, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) was used to measure the severity of malocclusions and the clinical need for orthodontic treatment, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to measure self-esteem, and the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to measure the need for orthodontic treatment according to the patient's perception. The results showed that most patients had some degree of malocclusion, with severe malocclusion being the most prevalent (67.7%). In terms of the distribution of malocclusion severity by age, very severe malocclusions were most commonly found at ages 13 and 14, and in terms of gender, malocclusions were more prevalent in females. Regarding self-esteem, two-thirds of the sample had high (46.2%) or medium (24.7%) self-esteem, while only 29.0% had low self-esteem. No statistically significant relationship was found between the severity of malocclusions and self-esteem level (p=0.809, p>0.05), nor between the severity of malocclusions and the need for orthodontic treatment as perceived by the adolescent patients (p=0.083, p>0.05).

Los diferentes grados de severidad de las maloclusiones podrían afectar de alguna manera la autoestima de los adolescentes. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar el impacto de las maloclusiones en la autoestima y la necesidad de tratamiento de ortodoncia en pacientes adolescentes atendidos en la clínica odontológica ODAM, Lima 2021. Para cumplirlo, se diseñó un estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y de corte transversal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 93 pacientes con edades entre los 11 y 14 años, que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Para medir la severidad de las maloclusiones y la necesidad clínica de tratamiento de ortodoncia, se utilizó el Índice de Estética Dental (DAI), para medir la autoestima se utilizó la Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg (RSES) y para medir la necesidad de tratamiento ortodóntico de acuerdo a la percepción del paciente, se utilizó Componente Estético (AC) del Índice de Necesidad de Tratamiento Ortodóntico (IOTN). Los resultados indican que la mayoría de los pacientes presentan algún grado de maloclusión, siendo la maloclusión muy severa la más prevalente (67.7%). En cuanto a la distribución de la severidad de las maloclusiones con respecto a la edad, las maloclusiones muy severas se encontraron con mayor frecuencia a los 13 años y 14 años, y con respecto al género, las maloclusiones fueron más prevalentes mujeres. Con respecto al nivel de autoestima, se encontró que dos terceras partes de la muestra presentan una autoestima Alta (46.2%) o Media (24.7%). Solo el 29.0% presentan una Baja autoestima. No existe relación estadísticamente significativa entre la severidad de las maloclusiones y el nivel de autoestima (p= 0.809, p>0.05), ni entre la severidad de las maloclusiones y la necesidad de tratamiento de ortodoncia percibida por los pacientes adolescentes (p=0.083, p>0.05).
