Relationship between psycho-emotional states and pain perception in patients receiving treatment at the dental clinic of the Norbert Wiener University

Abstract

The sample consisted of 385 patients who received dental treatment at the University Norbert Wiener Dental Clinic from May to July 2022. Each patient was explained the entire procedure and the implications of the research and signed an informed consent. Before the dental treatment, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) questionnaire was administered. After the treatment, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was completed. Method: Once completed, the data were processed using Stata v.17, and tables were created in Excel for descriptive analysis with tables and graphs. Results: The study found that a higher number of patients presented depression before the dental treatment (96.88%). It was also found that the age group of 18 to 28 years showed the highest levels of mild anxiety and mild stress related to pain. The age group of 29 to 40 years showed the highest level of mild depression related to pain. Males showed the highest levels of depression and stress related to pain, while females showed higher levels of anxiety and mild stress related to pain. Conclusion: A relationship exists between psychoemotional states and pain perception, as patients who showed normal levels of depression, anxiety, and stress perceived pain as mild (34.29%-30.39%-32.73%).

La muestra estuvo conformada por 385 pacientes que acudieron y recibieron tratamiento dental en la clínica odontológica de la Universidad Norbert Wiener durante el periodo de mayo a julio del 2022. Se le explicó a cada paciente todo el procedimiento y lo que implicó la investigación, se les hizo firmar el consentimiento informado. Previa realización del tratamiento dental se le hizo desarrollar el Cuestionario de la escala abreviada de DepresiónAnsiedad y Estrés (DASS-21), luego de terminado el tratamiento se procedió al llenado de la Escala Visual analógica (EVA). Método. Una vez terminado se obtuvieron los datos para su procesamiento utilizando el paquete estadístico Stata v.17, luego se procede a elaborar las tablas en Excel y para el análisis descriptivo se elaboraron tablas y gráficos. Resultados. El trabajo de investigación obtuvo como resultado que un mayor número de personas presentó depresión previa al tratamiento dental (96.88%), también se encontró que el grupo etario de 18 a 28 años de edad fue el que presentó mayor nivel de ansiedad leve y estrés leve con relación al dolor, el grupo etario de 29 a 40 años de edad fue el que presentó mayor nivel de depresión leve con relación al dolor, el sexo masculino fue el que presentó mayor nivel de depresión y estrés con relación al dolor mientras que el sexo femenino presentó mayor nivel de ansiedad y estrés leve con relación al dolor . Conclusiones. Sí existe relación entre los estados psicoemocionales y la percepción del dolor ya que los pacientes que mostraron un nivel de depresión, ansiedad y estrés normal percibieron el dolor de manera leve (34.29%- 30.39%- 32.73%).
