Abuse of social networks and self-control in secondary school students of the Chorrillos district, 2019

Abstract

420 secondary school students were studied in a non-probabilistic sample to check the relationship between social media abuse and self-control. The Social Media Addiction Scale (ARS) by Miguel Escurra and Edwin Salas and the Child and Adolescent Self-Control Questionnaire (CACIA) by Capafóns Bonet and Silva Moreno, adapted for the Peruvian context, were used. The results indicated that 41.6% of the participants were at a moderate level of social media abuse and 31.1% were at a regular level of self-control. Additionally, statistically significant differences were found in the obsession component (U = 19835.0; p = .003) and social media abuse (U = 20287.5; p = .010) by gender. Statistically significant differences were also found in the lack of control over social media use (X2 = 6.599; p = .037) and social media abuse (X2 = 5.919; p = .042) by age. Finally, a highly significant negative and moderate-low correlation (rho = -.310; p = .000) was found between social media abuse and self-control

420 estudiantes de educación secundaria fueron estudiados en una muestra no probabilística con el propósito de comprobar la relación entre el abuso de las redes sociales y el autocontrol. Se utilizaron la Escala de Adicción a las Redes Sociales (ARS) de Miguel Escurra y Edwin Salas y el Cuestionario de Autocontrol Infantil y Adolescente (CACIA) de Capafóns Bonet y Silva Moreno, adaptado a nuestro entorno. Los resultados obtenidos señalan que el 41.6% de los participantes se ubicó en el moderado en abuso de las redes sociales y el 31.1% se ubican en el nivel regular en autocontrol. Además, existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el componente obsesión por las redes sociales (U = 19835.0; p = .003) y abuso de las redes sociales (U = 20287.5; p = .010) de acuerdo al género. También, existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el componente falta de control en el uso de las redes sociales (X2 = 6.599; p = .037) y abuso de las redes sociales (X2 = 5.919; p = .042) en función a la edad. Por último, se encontró que existe una correlación estadística altamente significativa, de tipo negativa y de grado moderada baja (rho = -.310; p = .000) entre el abuso de las redes sociales y el autocontrol.
