Level of knowledge about the use of mouthwashes by students from the V to X cycle of the UPNW during dental care as a preventive measure against Covid-19. Lime – 2021

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the level of knowledge regarding the use of mouthwashes during dental care as a preventive measure against COVID-19 among students at UPNW. The research was applied, with a cross-sectional descriptive design, and the sample consisted of 237 dental students enrolled from the fifth to the tenth cycle during the 2021-2 period, who were taking preclinical and clinical courses. Data collection was conducted through a virtual form consisting of 20 questions in total, divided into 4 topics, each with 5 questions. The questionnaire was subjected to expert judgment for validation as an instrument and, subsequently, a pilot test where a reliability coefficient of 0.80 was obtained. The results showed that 79.7% of the dental students had an average level of knowledge about the use of mouthwashes during dental care as a preventive measure against COVID-19. Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found between the level of knowledge about mouthwashes and the age of the students (p=0.007). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the level of knowledge about mouthwashes and the sex of the students (p=0.586), although the female sex scored better than the male sex. In conclusion, a large percentage of students showed an average level of knowledge about the use of mouthwashes during COVID-19, and regarding age and sex, they also showed an average level of knowledge.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el nivel de conocimiento sobre el uso de colutorios bucales durante la atención odontológica como medida preventiva frente al COVID-19 en alumnos de la UPNW. La investigación fue de tipo aplicada, con un diseño descriptivo transversal, y la muestra estuvo conformada por 237 estudiantes de odontología matriculados de quinto a décimo ciclo durante el período 2021-2, quienes estaban cursando materias preclínicas y clínicas. Para la recolección de datos se aplicó un formulario virtual que constó de 20 preguntas en general, divididas en 4 tópicos, cada uno compuesto por 5 preguntas. El cuestionario fue sometido a un juicio de expertos para su validez como instrumento y, posteriormente, a una prueba piloto donde se obtuvo un coeficiente de confiabilidad de 0.80. Los resultados mostraron que el 79.7% de los alumnos de odontología obtuvieron un nivel de conocimiento medio sobre el uso de colutorios bucales durante la atención odontológica como medida preventiva frente al COVID-19. Además, se encontró una diferencia estadística significativa entre el nivel de conocimiento sobre el uso de colutorios bucales y la edad de los alumnos (p=0,007). Sin embargo, no se encontró una diferencia estadística significativa entre el nivel de conocimiento sobre colutorios bucales y el sexo de los alumnos (p=0,586), aunque porcentualmente el sexo femenino obtuvo mejores calificaciones que el sexo masculino. En conclusión, un gran porcentaje de alumnos presentó un nivel de conocimiento medio sobre el uso de colutorios bucales en tiempos de COVID-19, y en cuanto a la edad y el sexo también presentaron un nivel de conocimiento medio.
