Grip strength and functional capacity in older adults attending a physical therapy center in Surquillo, 2023

Abstract

The aim was to determine how grip strength relates to functional capacity in elderly patients attended to in a physical therapy center in Surquillo. This research uses a quantitative approach, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational design with 91 participants, selected through census sampling, considering selection criteria. The grip strength variable was measured using the JAMAR dynamometer, and functional capacity was measured using the Barthel Index, both Gold Standard instruments. A sociodemographic data collection form was used. The research results showed that 65% of participants were female, and 52% were aged 70-99 years. 58% had normal strength levels, and 66% had independent functional capacity. The Spearman coefficient was 0.49, with a significance of less than 0.05, indicating a positive relationship between the variables. It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between grip strength and functional capacity in elderly patients attending a physical therapy center in Surquillo in 2023.

La finalidad fue determinar cómo se relaciona la fuerza de agarre y la capacidad funcional en adultos mayores atendidos en un centro de terapia física en surquillo. Investigación con el enfoque cuantitativo, del tipo no experimental, de corte transversal y correlacional, en 91 participantes, los cuales fueron seleccionados a través del muestreo censal, considerando los criterios de selección. La variable fuerza de agarre fue medida mediante el dinamómetro JAMAR y para la capacidad funcional, se usó el Índice de Barthel, ambos instrumentos Gold standard. Se utilizó una ficha para recolectar lo datos sociodemográficos. Los resultados de la investigación evidenciaron al 65% al sexo femenino, las edades de 70 a 99 años con un 52%. El 58% tuvo un nivel de fuerza normal y 66 % un nivel de capacidad funcional independiente. además, se utilizó el coeficiente de Spearman, el cual obtuvo un 0,49 así mismo una significancia menor al 0.05, por la cual se determinó que, hay relación positiva entre las variables. Se concluyéndose, entonces que existe una relación significativa entre la fuerza de agarre y la capacidad funcional en adultos mayores que asisten a un centro de terapia física en surquillo, 2023.
