Relationship of the occlusal vertical dimension by means of the Ladda method according to facial biotype, in dentistry students of the Norbert Wiener private university

Abstract

The primary objective of this research was to determine the relationship between Occlusal Vertical Dimension (OVD) using the Ladda method and facial biotype in dentistry students at Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included a sample of 201 students of both sexes, selected based on inclusion criteria. Facial biotype was determined using the total morphological facial index. Measurements were taken using a TRUPER digital caliper (150 mm x 0.01 mm). OVD was measured using the Ladda method, which involves the length of the index and little fingers of the right hand. Results: The study found statistically significant differences in OVD between at least two groups. Highly significant differences were observed between brachyfacial and mesofacial groups (p<0.05) and between mesofacial and dolichofacial groups (p<0.01). The study concluded that the dolichofacial biotype showed a high positive correlation with both the little finger and index finger. A general correlation was observed in both sexes between OVD and finger lengths. For males, OVD showed a low but significant correlation with the index finger (p<0.01) and the little finger (p<0.05). For females, OVD also showed a low but significant correlation with both the index and little fingers (p<0.01). Conclusion: This method is reliable, cost-effective, reproducible, and non-invasive for the patient.

El objetivo principal para la realización de este trabajo de investigación fue relacionar la Dimensión Vertical Oclusal mediante el método Ladda según Biotipo Facial, en Estudiantes de Odontología de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener. El presente estudio fue de tipo descriptivo – transversal. Con una muestra de 201 estudiantes, ambos sexos, según los criterios de inclusión. Para la determinación del biotipo facial se utilizó el índice facial morfológico total. Estas mediciones se realizaron con un calibrador digital MARCA TRUPER de 150 mm x 0.01 mm. Para la determinación de la dimensión vertical Oclusal (DVO) con el método de Ladda, se midió la longitud del dedo índice y la longitud del dedo meñique, ambas correspondientes a la mano derecha. En el estudio se determinó que existen diferencias estadísticas significativas de la dimensión vertical oclusal entre al menos dos grupos las diferencias altamente significativas fueron entre los grupos Braquifacial vs Mesofacial (p<0.05), muy signficativa entre Mesofacial vs Dolicofacial (p<0.01) y entre Mesofacial vs Dolicofacial (p<0.01). Concluyendo el estudio encontró una mayor correlación alta positiva en el Biotipo Dolicofacial con el dedo meñique e Índice. y una correlación general en ambos sexos con el dedo índice y meñique con el coeficiente de correlación de la DVO con las medidas antropométricas, Al relacionar la DVO-Masculino, con la longitud del índice una correlación baja muy significativa (p<0,01) y con la longitud del dedo meñique correlación baja significativa (p<0,05). En cuanto a la DVO-Femenino con la longitud del dedo índice correlación baja significativa con p< 0,01 lo mismo con la longitud del dedo meñique donde se halló una correlación baja, pero con significancia a nivel de p< 0,01 Este estudio es un método confiable, económico, reproducible y nada invasivo para el paciente.
