Interferon gamma and hematological biomarkers in patients with latent tuberculosis infection care at a health center in Lima - Peru 2020

Abstract

Currently, a quarter of the world's population is infected with the Koch bacillus but shows no symptoms. This condition is called latent tuberculosis infection. Objective: To determine the relationship between gamma interferon and hematological biomarkers in patients with latent tuberculosis infection treated at a health center in Lima, Peru, in 2020. Method and Design: Observational, cross-sectional, and correlational study. Results from 133 patients who underwent the QFT-Plus test between January and February 2020 and their hemograms were collected. Additionally, 20 patients with active TB were included as controls. Results: Hemograms of patients with ILTB (33.8%) were compared, finding a statistically significant finding with a p-value < 0.036 in the lymphocytes of male patients with ILTB. Conclusions: Gamma interferon is only related to the absolute lymphocyte count parameter in male patients. Further research is needed to identify other hematological indicators that help differentiate the status or progression of ILTB patients.

En la actualidad, la cuarta parte de la población en el mundo está infectada con el bacilo de Koch y no manifiestan síntomas. A esta condición se le denomina infección tuberculosis latente. Objetivo: Determinar la relación que existe entre el interferón gamma y biomarcadores hematológicos en pacientes con infección de tuberculosis latente atendidos en un centro de salud de Lima - Perú 2020. Método y diseño: Estudio observacional, transversal y correlacional. Se recolectó los resultados de 133 pacientes que se realizaron el ensayo de QFT –Plus del periodo de enero a febrero 2020 y sus hemogramas. Además, se adicionaron 20 pacientes con TBC activa como control. Resultados: Comparamos los hemogramas de los pacientes con ILTB 33.8%, encontrando un hallazgo estadísticamente significativo con un valor p<0.036 en los linfocitos de los pacientes masculinos con ILTB. Conclusiones: El interferón gamma tiene relación solo con el parámetro del recuento absoluto de linfocitos en los pacientes masculinos, se debe continuar con la búsqueda de más indicadores hematológico que ayude a diferenciar el estado o progresión del paciente con ILTB.
