Effectiveness of outpatient eye screening tests for the early detection of myopia in children under 8 years old

Abstract

Objective: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of outpatient ocular screening tests for the early detection of myopia in children under 8 years old. Methodology: Observational and retrospective systematic review. The search was restricted to full-text articles. The selected studies were critically reviewed, and the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations were evaluated using the GRADE system. Results: 10 articles were chosen, with 30% from China, 20% from India, 10% from Spain, 20% from the USA, 10% from England, and 10% from Peru. Regarding the study designs, 6 were systematic reviews, 3 were cross-sectional analytic studies, and 1 was a case-control study. The evidence on the effectiveness of outpatient ocular screening tests for early detection of myopia is very high. Conclusion: There is high effectiveness of outpatient ocular screening tests for the early detection of myopia in children under 8 years old.

OBJETIVO: Sistematizar la evidencia acerca de la efectividad de las pruebas de tamizaje ocular ambulatorio para la detección precoz de miopía en niños menores de 8 años. METODOLOGIA: Revisión sistemática observacional y retrospectiva. La búsqueda se restringió a artículos con texto completo. Los trabajos seleccionados se sometieron a una lectura crítica y la calidad de la evidencia y fuerza de las recomendaciones, fueron evaluadas con el Sistema GRADE. RESULTADOS: Se eligieron 10 artículos, encontrando que 30% de ellos corresponden a estudios de china, los demás proceden de india (20%), España (10%), Estados Unidos (20%), Inglaterra (10%) y Perú (10%). Considerando los diseños de investigación, se incluyó: seis revisiones sistemáticas, tres estudios transversales analíticos y uno de casos y controles. La evidencia acerca de la efectividad de las pruebas de tamizaje ocular ambulatorio para la detección precoz es muy alta en la miopía. CONCLUSIONES: Existe alta efectividad de las pruebas de tamizaje ocular ambulatorio para la detección precoz de miopía en niños menores de 8 años.
