Coping strategy and quality of life in cancer patients treated at a national hospital in Cercado de Lima, 2023

Abstract

In this research, whose objective was "to determine the relationship between coping strategies and quality of life in patients with cancer"; the methodology was based on the hypothetical deductive method, applied with quantitative approach and non-experimental cross-sectional correlational design; The population taken was 80 patients chosen through convenience sampling, who met the inclusion criteria; to whom the survey was applied, with the questionnaires of the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (MAC) (40 items) of Watson et al, 1988), modified by (Trigoso, 2009) (31), to measure the coping strategies and the Functional Assessment for Cancer Treatment scale (FACT-G-4) (31): General (FACT-G-4) (27 Items), Cella et al, 1993, developed to measure quality of life in oncology patients. The data were tabulated with the SPSS 25 program, and the results showed that men have a greater tendency to suffer from this type of neoplasm, which is equivalent to 71.3%; it was found that the disease occurs mostly between 45 and 65 years of age. In general, 57.5% respond with maladaptive strategies, of which 69.6% have a good quality of life, standing out in the dimensions of fighting spirit with 75.8% and Fatalism/Aesthetic Acceptance with 75.6%; whose Spearman's Rho in general is = 0.046, p-value 0.684. In conclusion, it is determined that there is no relationship between both variables, giving the null hypothesis as accepted.

En esta pesquisa el objetivo fue “determinar la relación que existe entre la estrategia de afrontamiento y la calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos”. La metodología fue a base del método hipotético deductivo, aplicada con enfoque cuantitativo y diseño no experimental correlacional de corte transversal; la población tomada fue de 80 pacientes escogidos a través del muestro por conveniencia, los cuales reunieron los criterios de inclusión; a quienes se les aplico la encuesta, con los cuestionarios de la Escala de ajuste mental al cáncer (MAC) (40 Ítems) de Watson et al, 1988), modificada por (Trigoso, 2009) (31), para medir las estrategias de afrontamiento y la escala de Evaluación funcional para el tratamiento del cáncer: general (FACT-G-4) (27 ítems), Cella et al, 1993, elaborada para medir la calidad de vida en pacientes oncológicos. Los datos se tabularon con el programa SPSS 25, de los resultados se obtuvo que los varones tienen mayor tendencia a sufrir este tipo de neoplasia lo cual equivale un 71,3%; hallándose que la enfermedad aparece mayormente entre 45 a 65 años. En general el 57.5% responde con estrategias desadaptativas, de los cuales un 69.6% tiene buena calidad de vida, destacando en las dimensiones espíritu de lucha con 75.8% y Fatalismo/Aceptación estoica con un 75.6%; cuyo Rho de Spearman en general es = 0,046, p-valor 0,684. En conclusión, se determina que no existe relación entre las dos variables, dando por aceptada la hipótesis nula.
