Factors limiting the choice of the intrauterine device in womernin reproductive age atended in the Manuel Barreto Childhood Center in the july – september 2019 period

Abstract

Objective: To determine the factors limiting the choice of intrauterine devices (IUDs) among women of reproductive age attended at the Manuel Barreto Maternal and Child Center from July to September 2019. Materials and Methods: This was an analytical, prospective, cross-sectional, correlational study with a sample of 264 women of reproductive age, both Peruvian and foreign, attended at the Manuel Barreto Maternal and Child Center. Results: Personal factors limiting the choice of IUDs included cohabitation status (p=0.031) and secondary education level (p=0.005). Cultural factors included the belief that copper IUDs are only suitable for women with children (p=0.021) and religion (p=0.009). Gynecological-obstetric factors limiting IUD choice among Peruvian and foreign women were the number of children (p=0.006), age at first sexual intercourse (p=0.002), and bleeding during sexual intercourse (p=0.042), all of which were statistically significant. Conclusion: Personal, cultural, and gynecological-obstetric factors limit the choice of intrauterine devices among women of reproductive age attended at the Manuel Barreto Maternal and Child Center.

Objetivo: Determinar los factores que limitan la elección del dispositivo intrauterino en mujeres en edad reproductiva atendidas en el Centro Materno Infantil Manuel Barreto en el periodo de julio – septiembre 2019. Materiales y Método: El estudio es tipo analítico prospectivo de corte transversal correlacional, con una muestra de 264 mujeres en edad reproductiva, tanto peruanas como extranjeras, atendidas en el Centro Materno Infantil Manuel Barreto.Resultados: Los factores personales que limitan la elección del dispositivo intrauterino fueron el estado civil conviviente (p=0,031) y el grado de instrucción secundaria (p=,005). Los factores culturales que limitan la elección del dispositivo intrauterino fueron que el uso de la T de cobre solo puede ser para mujeres con hijos (p=0,021) y la religión (p=0,009). Los factores gíneco obstétricos que limitan la elección del dispositivo intrauterino en mujeres peruanas y extranjeras fueron el número de hijos (p=0,006), la edad de la primera relación sexual (p=0,002) y el sangrado durante las relaciones sexuales (p=0,042) siendo estadísticamente significativo. Conclusión: Existen factores personales, culturales y gíneco obstétricos que limitan la elección del dispositivo intrauterino en mujeres en edad reproductiva atendidas en el Centro Materno Infantil Manuel Barreto.
