Level of knowledge in oral health of caries in children aged 8 to 12 years in state and private educational institutions, Lima 2018

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between the level of oral health knowledge of mothers and the presence of cavities in children aged 8 to 12 years in public and private educational institutions in Lima, 2018. The method used was descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 98 mothers and 98 children aged 8 to 12 years from the Thales Colina Educational Institution – Callao (Private). Additionally, 95 mothers and 95 children aged 8 to 12 years from Francisco Bolognesi Educational Institution (Public), totaling 386 participants. The instruments used were an oral health questionnaire and an intraoral clinical examination with a dental chart. The most representative results of the research revealed that both educational institutions had, for the most part, higher percentages of a “deficient” level of knowledge, and lower percentages of a “very good” level of knowledge in oral health among mothers of children aged 8 to 12 years in the mentioned institutions. Furthermore, both the public and private educational institutions mostly presented higher percentages of “severe” dental caries and lower percentages of “healthy” dental caries. Finally, it was found that there is a significant relationship between the level of oral health knowledge of mothers and the presence of cavities in children aged 8 to 12 years in both educational institutions.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la relación del nivel de conocimiento en salud bucal de madres y la presencia de caries en niños de 8 a 12 años de edad en instituciones educativas, estatal y privada. Lima, 2018. El método utilizado fue descriptivo, correlacional y transversal. La muestra estuvo constituida por 98 madres, y 98 escolares de 8 a 12 años de edad, de la Institución Educativa: Thales Colina – Callao (Particular). Asimismo, 95 madres, y 95 escolares de 8 a 12 años de la Institución Educativa Francisco Bolognesi (Estatal); un total de 386 participantes. Los instrumentos empleados fueron, un cuestionario de salud bucal, y un examen clínico intraoral con odontograma. Los resultados más representativos de la investigación dieron a conocer que, ambas Instituciones Educativas presentan, en su mayoría, porcentajes mayores de un nivel “deficiente” de conocimiento, y porcentajes menores de un nivel “muy bueno” de conocimiento, en salud bucal de madres de niños de 8 a 12 años de edad en las instituciones educativas mencionadas. Asimismo, tanto la Institución Educativa estatal como la Institución Educativa privado presentan, en su mayoría, porcentajes mayores de presencia “grave” de caries dental, y porcentajes menores de presencia “sana” de caries dental. Finalmente, se da a conocer que, sí existe una relación significativa entre el nivel de conocimiento en salud bucal de madres y la presencia de caries en niños de 8 a 12 años de edad en ambas instituciones educativas.
