Effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Neurostimulation (TENS) in the Treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea

Abstract

The objective was to determine the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in women with primary dysmenorrhea. The risk of selection in the individual studies was assessed using the PEDro scale and a thematic validity instrument. A search was conducted in the PubMed, EBSCOhost, and SciELO databases. Controlled clinical trials and systematic reviews of female patients with primary dysmenorrhea were included. The various treatment modalities generated changes in the symptoms of dysmenorrhea. This systematic review will determine the effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) compared to other treatment methods in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. Based on the results of this research, TENS will be proposed as a treatment method, as it has been shown to be effective, demonstrated by the improvement in the quality of life of these patients, such as reduced absenteeism from work and school.

El objetivo fue determinar la efectividad de la estimulacion nerviosa eléctrica transcutánea en mujeres con dismenorrea primaria. El riesgo de selección en los estudios individuales fue realizado mediante la escala de Pedro y un instrumento de validez tematica. Se realizo la busqueda en las bases de datos de Pubmed, EBSCOhost, SciELO. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos controlados y revisiones sistemáticos de pacientes mujeres que presenten dismenorrea primaria. Las diversas modalidades de tratamiento generaron cambios en los síntomas de la dismenorrea. Esta RS determinara los efectos de la Estimación Nerviosa Electrica Transcutanea /TENS) en comparacion a otros metodos de tratamientos en pacientes con Dismenorrea Primaria, con los resultados de la presente investigacion se propondra como metodo de tratamiento ya que se ha demostrado que es efectivo, esto se demuestra en la mejora calidad de vida de estos pacientes como disminuxcion de ausentismo laboral y escolar.
