Knowledge and attitudes towards the new coronavirus covid-19 in dental surgeons of Lima 2020

Abstract

The first reports of patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus were detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and it quickly spread to all continents. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitudes towards the new COVID-19 coronavirus among Dentists in Lima. This research was descriptive and cross-sectional, and a survey was conducted through a Google Form. The instrument, previously validated through expert judgment, consisted of 20 questions with various alternatives, focusing on COVID-19. The sample consisted of 236 dentists. Statistical analysis was carried out using the ANOVA, Chi-square, and Student's T tests. Results: 79 subjects (33.5%) had low knowledge, 148 subjects (62.7%) had medium knowledge, and 9 subjects (3.8%) had high knowledge. Regarding attitudes, 12 (5.1%) had negative attitudes, 2 (0.8%) had indifferent attitudes, and 222 (94.1%) had positive attitudes. 117 (49.6%) were female dentists and 119 (50.4%) were male dentists. Regarding age, 23 (9.7%) were in the 21-35 years range, 210 (89%) were in the 36-59 years range, and 3 (1.3%) were 60 years or older. Regarding years of work experience, 16 (6.8%) had 1-5 years, 27 (11.4%) had 6-10 years, and 193 (81.8%) had 11 or more years. Conclusion: 62.7% of the dentists in Lima had a medium level of knowledge, and only 3.8% reached a high level.

Los primeros reportes de pacientes con el virus del SARS-CoV-2 se detectaron en Wuhan–China en diciembre del 2019 y en poco tiempo se propagó a todos los continentes. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar los conocimientos y actitudes frente al nuevo coronavirus COVID-19 en Cirujanos Dentistas de Lima. Esta investigación fue descriptiva y transversal, se realizó una encuesta a través de un formulario de google. El instrumento previamente validado mediante juicio de expertos, constaba de 20 preguntas con diversas alternativas y enfocadas en relación al COVID-19. La muestra estuvo conformada por 236 cirujanos dentistas. El análisis estadístico se ejecutó a través de las pruebas Anova, Chi cuadrado y T de Student. Los resultados fueron: 79 sujetos (33.5%) presentaron nivel de conocimiento bajo, 148 sujetos (62.7%) nivel medio y 9 sujetos (3.8%) nivel alto. En relación a las actitudes, se observó que 12 (5.1%) tuvieron actitudes negativas; 2 (0,8%) actitudes indiferentes y 222 (94.1%) actitudes positivas. 117 (49,6%) fueron de odontólogas y 119 (50,4%) fueron odontólogos. En relación a la edad, 23 (9,7%) dentro del rango de 21-35 años; 210 (89 %) rango de 36-59 años y 3 (1;3%) rango de 60 a más años. En relación a los años de experiencia laboral, 16 (6,8%) rango de 1-5 años, 27 (11,4%) rango de 6-10 años y 193 (81.8%) rango de 11 a más años. Se concluye que el 62.7 % de los cirujanos dentistas de Lima obtuvieron un nivel medio y solo el 3.8% alcanzó nivel alto.
