Comparative analysis of cervicovaginal infections through papan sme in pregnant and non-pregnant patients of the San Bartolomé National Mother-Child Hospital, 2022

Abstract

Cervicovaginal infections affect the overall health of women. During pregnancy, these infections are a risk factor for severe complications for both the mother and the fetus. The objective of the study was to perform a comparative analysis of cervicovaginal infections through the Pap smear in pregnant and non-pregnant patients. A quantitative, observational, and comparative descriptive research design was developed, including a sample of 826 reports of cervical smears from pregnant (n=413) and non-pregnant (n=413) patients at the National Hospital Madre Niño San Bartolomé. The study found a prevalence of 26.9% of bacterial vaginosis, 11.7% identified Candida spp., 2.1% showed cellular changes compatible with HPV, 1% found Trichomonas vaginalis, and 0.2% exhibited cellular changes compatible with herpes simplex. The research showed significant differences in cervicovaginal infections between pregnant and non-pregnant patients (p=0.001). When evaluating each infection, no significant differences were observed with human papillomavirus infection (p=0.462), herpes simplex virus (p=0.157), Candida spp. (p=0.066), and Trichomonas vaginalis (p=0.477) in pregnant and non-pregnant patients. However, significant differences were demonstrated in bacterial vaginosis infection between pregnant and non-pregnant patients (p=0.003). The study concluded that there are significant differences in cervicovaginal infections, specifically when analyzing bacterial vaginosis, between pregnant and non-pregnant patients at the National Hospital Madre Niño San Bartolomé.

Las infecciones cervicovaginales afectan la salud integral de la mujer. Durante la gestación, estas infecciones son un factor de riesgo para complicaciones graves tanto para la madre como para el feto. El objetivo del estudio fue realizar un análisis comparativo de las infecciones cervicovaginales mediante el papanicolaou en pacientes gestantes y no gestantes. Se diseño una investigación cuantitativa, observacional y descriptivo comparativo, donde se incluyó como muestra a 826 informes de extendidos cervicouterinos de pacientes gestantes (n=413) y no gestantes (n=413) del Hospital Nacional Madre Niño San Bartolomé. El estudio halló una prevalencia del 26.9% de vaginosis bacteriana, en el 11.7% se identificaron Candida spp.¸ en el 2.1% se observaron cambios celulares compatibles con VPH, en el 1% se hallaron Trichomona vaginalis y en el 0.2% se observaron cambios celulares compatibles con herpes simple. La investigación evidenció que existe diferencias significativas de las infecciones cervicovaginales en pacientes gestantes y no gestantes (p=0.001). Al evaluar cada infección no se observaron diferencias significativas con la infección por virus del papiloma humano (p=0.462), virus del herpes simple (p=0.157), Candida spp. (p=0.066) y Trichomonas vaginalis (p=0.477) en pacientes gestantes y no gestantes. Sin embargo, si se demostró que existe diferencias significativas de la infección por vaginosis bacteriana en pacientes gestantes y no gestantes (p=0.003). El estudio pudo concluir que existe diferencias significativas de las infecciones cervicovaginales, específicamente al analizar la vaginosis bacteriana, en pacientes gestantes y no gestantes del Hospital Nacional Madre Niño San Bartolomé.
