Knowledge and care of the central venous catheter in nurses of the critical and intensive care service of the María Auxiliadora Hospital, Lima - 2023

Abstract

The central venous catheter (CVC) is a device that allows the introduction of large drugs, nutrition, parenteral fluids at the level of large central veins (1). However, prolonged use, hospital stay and inadequate care of this device in critical areas cause severe infections due to bacterial colonization, leading to morbidity and mortality of patients, being significantly higher in intensive care units (2). It was found that yes, there is a significant relationship between knowledge and care, where it was evidenced that knowledge was low and care was inadequate, explaining that the greater the knowledge, the greater the care for the patient. Concluding that the nursing role is based on preventive measures such as adequate hand washing, use of sterile gloves, observation of the device on the skin, signs of phlogosis, asepsis, antisepsis and biosafety in a humanized way, hence the need for have competent and trained nursing staff to guarantee good management and care of this CVC device from insertion, permanence and removal for the benefit of the patient.

El catéter venoso central (CVC), es un aparato que permite la introducción de grandes fármacos, fluidos nutriciones, parenterales a nivel de grandes venas centrales (1). Sin embargo, el uso prolongado, la estancia hospitalaria y el inadecuado cuidado de este dispositivo en áreas críticas, causan infecciones severas por la colonización bacteriana conllevando a la morbi-mortalidad de los pacientes, siendo significativamente mayor en las unidades de cuidados intensivos (2). Se constató que sí, existe una relación significativa entre el conocimiento y los cuidados, donde se evidencio que el conocimiento fue bajo y el cuidado inadecuado, explicando que, a mayor conocimiento mayor cuidado para el paciente. Concluyendo que el rol de enfermería se basa en las medidas preventivas como el adecuado lavado de manos, utilización de guantes estériles, la observación del dispositivo en la piel, signos de flogosis, asepsia, antisepsia y bioseguridad de forma humanizada, de ahí la necesidad de tener personal enfermero competente y capacitado para garantizar un buen manejo y cuidado de este dispositivo del CVC desde la inserción, permanencia y retiro en beneficio del paciente.
