Oral alterations associated with gestational age at birth in babies aged 0 to 12 months at the Baby ISOFAP clinic, Lima 2010-2018

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the association between gestational age and oral alterations in babies from 0 to 12 months old at the ISOFAP Baby Clinic in Lima, 2010-2018. A descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The population consisted of 710 medical records of infants aged 0 to 12 months. Data were recorded in a data sheet and Excel table, and then analyzed using SPSS 22 statistical software. Inferential statistics were performed using the Chi-square test and Fisher’s correction test. Results: No significant difference (p=0.556) was found between congenital oral alterations and gestational age. No significant difference was found between the presence of developmental oral alterations and gestational age (p>0.99). Bohn's nodules were found in 23%, followed by Epstein pearls (2.7%), natal teeth (0.6%), and neonatal teeth (0.6%). Premature infants (9.3%) had Bohn's nodules (9.3%) and Epstein pearls (9.3%) but did not have natal or neonatal teeth. It is noteworthy that term infants developed more congenital oral alterations (22.1%) than preterm and postterm infants (2.8%).

Éste trabajo de investigación consistió en determinar la asociación entre edad gestacional y alteraciones bucales en bebés nascidos de 0 a 12 meses de edad en la clínica del bebé ISOFAP, Lima 2010-2018. Se realizó un estudio de tipo descriptivo, retrosprectivo y transversal. La población estuvo conformada por 710 historias clínicas de pacientes bebés de 0 a 12 meses de edad. Se registró los datos en una ficha de datos, cuadro de Excel, luego se trabajó con el programa estadístico SPSS 22, la estadística inferencial se realizó mediante prueba de Chi cuadrado y prueba de corrección de Fisher. En los resultados del estudio no se encontró diferencia significativa (p=0,556) entre las alteraciones bucales congénitas y la edad gestacional. No hubo diferencia significativa con presencia alteraciones bucales de desarrollo y la edad gestacional (p>0.99). Se encontró nódulos de Bohn (23%), seguido de perlas de Epstein (2,7%), dientes natales (0,6%) y neoanatales (0,6%). Los nacidos a pretérmino (9,3%), tenían nódulos de Bohn (9,3%), perlas de Epstein (9,3%), no presentaron dientes natales ni neonatales. Hay que resaltar que los bebés nacidos a término, desarrollan más una alteración bucal congénita (22,1%), que los nacidos a pre término y pos término (2,8%).
