Effect of omega 3 supplementation in the treatment of patients with non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis

Abstract

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), defined as liver damage resulting from the accumulation of excess fat within hepatocytes, which leads to a chronic inflammatory process. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of omega-3 supplementation in patients with NASH; to do so, the research question was formulated: What is the effect of omega-3 supplementation in patients with NASH? Subsequently, the bibliographic search process was carried out in the PUBMED and EMBASE databases, selecting a total of 17 clinical studies, evaluated according to the CASPE tool, for the development of critical reading. Finally, the double-blind randomized clinical trial entitled "Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial" was analyzed, rated with a level of evidence A and a grade of recommendation Strong. The critical analysis concludes that in patients with NASH, supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as linseed and fish oils, has a significant impact on the plasma lipid profile. Furthermore, increased plasma levels of these PUFAs were associated with improved liver histology and morphology.

La esteatosis hepática no alcohólica (EHNA), definida como el daño hepático, producto de la acumulación del exceso de grasa dentro de los hepatocitos, lo cual conduce a un proceso inflamatorio crónico. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar el efecto de la suplementación de omega 3 en pacientes con EHNA; para ello se formuló la pregunta de investigación: ¿Cuál es el efecto de la suplementación con omega 3 en pacientes con EHNA? Posteriormente el proceso de búsqueda bibliográfica se realizó en la base de datos de PUBMED y EMBASE, seleccionando un total de 17 estudios clínicos, evaluados según la herramienta CASPE, para el desarrollo de la lectura crítica. Finalmente, se analizó el Ensayo Clínico Aleatorizado doble ciego titulado como “Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial”, calificado con un nivel de evidencia A y grado de recomendación Fuerte. El análisis crítico concluye que los pacientes con EHNA, la suplementación con ácidos grasos poliinsaturados omega-3, como los aceites de linaza y pescado tiene un impacto significativo en el perfil de lípidos plasmáticos. Así mismo, el aumento plasmático de estos PUFA se asoció con una mejor histología y morfología hepática.
