Functionality of lower limbs and its relationship with the risk of falls of the Center for the Elderly of the city of Huancayo, 2022

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between functionality, specifically lower limb strength and flexibility, in older adults at the Senior Citizens' Center in Huancayo and the risk of falls. Three tests were used: the five times sit-to-stand test, the maximum reach test in sitting, and the Tinetti test. These tests were conducted in January and February of 2022 on 90 eligible participants at the Senior Citizens' Center in Huancayo who agreed to participate in the study. Exclusion criteria included dependence for movement and perception issues. After tabulating the results, issues related to strength and flexibility were identified, as well as fall risk levels. However, the relationship between the study variables was inconsistent, which was attributed to the inadequacy of the tests used for this population. It was recommended to complement these tests with others in future studies.

Es un estudio para determinar la relación entre la funcionalidad, es decir, la fuerza de los miembros inferiores y flexibilidad de los adultos mayores del Centro del Adulto Mayor de la ciudad de Huancayo y el riesgo que sufran caídas. Se utilizó tres pruebas: cinco veces pararse y sentarse, la prueba de alcance máximo en sedente y el test de Tinetti. Las pruebas se aplicaron en enero y febrero de 2022 al total de 90 participantes elegibles en el Centro del adulto mayor de la ciudad de Huancayo que aceptaron participar en el estudio. Los criterios de exclusión fueron la dependencia para el movimiento y los problemas de percepción de la realidad. Tabulados los resultados, se identificó los problemas de fuerza y flexibilidad, así como el nivel de riesgo de caídas, pero se encontró que la relación entre las variables de estudio no era consistente, lo que se atribuyó a que las pruebas empleadas no resultaban suficientes para esta población. Se recomendó complementar estas pruebas con otras en trabajos posteriores.
