Relationship between the degree of temporomandibular disorder and the number of posterior occlusal pairs in adult patients who attend the Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre Stomatology Clinic during the year 2023

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the degree of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and the number of posterior occlusal pairs in adult patients attending the CEVRHT during 2023. This research is a cross-sectional, prospective observational study conducted on a sample of 137 patients over 28 years old who visited the Prosthetics department at CEVRHT and agreed to participate in the study during 2023. The modified Helkimo index by Maglione was used on a data sheet to determine the degree of TMD, and the Eichner classification index was used to measure the number of occlusal pairs, dividing the posterior teeth into four zones based on the existence of occlusal pairs in this sector (premolars and molars). The results showed that Category B was the most frequent, appearing in 75.4% of patients with mild TMD (p=0.001). Regarding age, patients aged 28 to 55 years presented 75.8% (p=0.033), while for the 56 and older age range, no significant relationship was found (p=0.060). As for sex, males had 55.6% of the cases (p=0.004), while no significant relationship was found in females (p=0.065). In conclusion, there is a relationship between the degree of temporomandibular disorder and the number of posterior occlusal pairs in adult patients attending CEVRHT during 2023.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la relación entre el grado de trastorno temporomandibular y el número de pares oclusales posteriores en pacientes adultos que acuden a la CEVRHT durante el año 2023. La investigación corresponde a un estudio transversal prospectivo observacional realizado en una muestra de 137 pacientes mayores de 28 años que acudieron a la consulta en el área de Prótesis en la CEVHT quienes aceptaron formar parte del estudio durante el año 2023, donde se usó el índice de Helkimo modificado por Maglione en una ficha de datos para determinar el grado de Trastorno temporomandibular, y para la medición de número de pares oclusales se usó el índice de clasificación de Eichner, que divide los dientes posteriores en cuatro zonas basadas en la existencia de pares oclusivos en este sector (premolares y molares). Los resultados demostraron la categoría B es el más frecuente presentándose 75,4% en pacientes con TTM leve (p=0,001); con respecto a la edad, los pacientes del rango de 28 a 55 años presentaron 75,8% (p=0,033), sin embargo, con respecto al rango 56 a más año no hay relación significativa (p=0,060); y con respecto al sexo, el sexo masculino tuvo 55,6% de los casos (p=0,004) y con respecto al sexo femenino, no existe relación significativa (p=0,065). En conclusión, existe relación entre el grado de trastorno temporomandibular y el número de pares oclusales posteriores en pacientes adultos que acuden a la CEVRHT durante el año 2023 .
