Temporomandibular disorders in relation to body posture in students of the 6th and 7th cycle of the dentistry career of the Norbert Wiener Private University, Lima-Peru 2019.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine if there was an association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and body posture in students from the 6th and 7th cycles of the Dentistry program at the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener in Lima, Peru, during 2019. The study was observational, analytical, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and prospective. The research was conducted at the Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, with a sample of 95 students from the 6th and 7th cycles. Clinical examination using Helkimo's index for TMD and the Adams test to assess body posture were used as data collection instruments. Regarding TMD distribution, moderate severity predominated in females (23.2%), in the younger age group (26.3%), and in the 7th cycle (21.1%). Regarding body posture alterations, it predominated in females (51.6%), in the younger age group (54.7%), and in the 6th cycle (38.9%). The study found that 70.53% of students had both alterations, with a p-value of less than 0.001, demonstrating an association between temporomandibular disorders and body posture in the students.

El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar si existió asociación entre los trastornos temporomandibulares y la postura corporal en los alumnos del 6to y 7mo ciclo de la carrera de odontología de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener en Lima-Perú durante el 2019. El estudio fue de tipo observacional, analítico, de carácter no experimental, transversal y prospectivo. La investigación se realizó en la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, con una muestra de 95 alumnos de 6to y 7mo ciclo. Se empleó como instrumentos para la recolección de datos, el examen clínico de Helkimo para TTM y el Test de Adams para evaluar la postura corporal. Según la distribución de TTM predominó el valor moderado, en el sexo femenino (23.2%), en el grupo etario joven (26.3%) y en el 7mo ciclo (21.1%). Según la distribución de las alteraciones de la postura corporal, esta predominó en el sexo femenino con el 51.6%, en el grupo etario de jóvenes con 54.7% y en el sexto ciclo académico con el 38.9%. El estudio obtuvo que el 70.53% presentó ambas alteraciones, con un p menor del 0.001, lo cual demostró la asociación entre los trastornos temporomandibulares y la postura corporal en los alumnos
