Presence of bruxism in students of the sixth and seventh cycle of the dentistry career of the Norbert Wiener Private University, in times of the Covid-19 pandemic. period 2020-II

Abstract

Bruxism is an involuntary parafunctional habit characterized by unconscious oscillating mandibular muscle activity, which can lead to anatomical changes, disrupting morphofunctional harmony and adequate orthofunction of the stomatognathic system. It is recognized as a significant public health issue. Over time, this disorder has remained relevant, adapting to modern approaches and trends. During the current global health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in psychoemotional disorders has been observed, which are considered contributing factors to bruxism. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bruxism among 212 sixth- and seventh-semester dentistry students at Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener (UPNW) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2020-II semester, analyzing variables such as age, sex, marital status, parenthood, employment, dental damage, muscular disorders, and joint disorders. Methods: This was an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and prospective study. The measurement instrument used was the Clinical Screening Self-Report Test, structured into four items. The first item included 11 questions, while the remaining three consisted of five statements each, addressing specific alterations in the stomatognathic system. Participants provided dichotomous answers ("Yes" or "No"). Results: Of the studied sample, 84 students (39.6%) were found to have bruxism, with a higher prevalence in females (24.5%). The age group with the most cases was 25–31 years. Conclusion: A portion of UPNW dentistry students was identified with bruxism during the current pandemic, representing less than 50% of the studied sample.

El bruxismo es un hábito parafuncional involuntario con actividad músculo mandibular oscilante no consciente, puede provocar cambios anatómicos alterando la armonía morfofuncional sin una adecuada ortofunción para el sistema estomatognático. Es evidenciado como un problema importante en la salud pública. La trascendencia de este trastorno en toda época, se ha mantenido latente a enfoques modernos o tendencias. En la actual coyuntura que atraviesa el mundo, frente a la emergencia sanitaria por el covid-19, se ha evidenciado que existe el aumento de trastornos psicoemocionales, siendo estas consideradas como uno de los factores para presentar bruxismo. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la presencia de bruxismo en 212 estudiantes del sexto y séptimo ciclo de la carrera de Odontología de la Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener (UPNW), en tiempos de pandemia por el COVID-19 en el periodo 2020-II; según su edad, sexo, estado civil, presencia de hijos, presencia de empleo, daños a nivel del diente, trastornos musculares y trastornos articulares. Este estudio es de tipo observacional descriptivo, de diseño transversal prospectivo; cuyo instrumento de medición que se utilizó, es el Test de autorreporte de Screening clínico, este test está estructurado por 4 ítems; el primer ítem está constituido por 11 preguntas; y los tres ítems restantes están conformados por 5 enunciados cada uno, referente a ciertas alteraciones del sistema estomatognático; siendo las respuestas dicotómicas (“SI” o “NO”) reportadas por el participante. Los resultados obtenidos en cuanto a la presencia de bruxismo, se halló que 84 estudiantes presentan bruxismo siendo el 39.6% de la muestra estudiada, predominando el sexo femenino con un 24.5% con esta parafunción; en relación a la edad, con mayores casos encontrados fueron en el rango de 25 a 31 años. Concluyendo que se halló estudiantes de odontología con bruxismo de la UPNW en la coyuntura actual, representando menos del 50% del tamaño muestral estudiado.
