Knowledge and attitudes about abortion in women of reproductive age, National Teaching Hospital Mother-Child San Bartolomé.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of abortion in Peru, considered a criminal act and a public health problem due to the undesirable physical and/or psychological consequences it generates for the mother-child duo, in addition to its recognized social impact. Therefore, it was deemed important to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes regarding abortion in women of childbearing age. The study is quantitative, relational, and cross-sectional in design. The sample consisted of 113 women who attended the National Hospital San Bartolomé between August and November 2012. A validated questionnaire was used to assess knowledge through expert judgment and point-biserial coefficient. To determine reliability, the Kuder-Richardson test was applied. Attitudes were measured using a Likert-type scale, whose validity and reliability were determined through expert judgment, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha. The results show that there is a high percentage of women with "regular knowledge" about abortion (49.6%) and mostly indifferent attitudes (45%). When relating both variables, the study shows that there is a significant relationship between them. Women with "insufficient knowledge" predominantly show acceptance of abortion (46.4%); women with "regular knowledge" show indifferent attitudes (41.1%); and women with "good knowledge" show indifferent attitudes (58.6%) with a tendency to reject abortion (34.5%). It is concluded that the greater the knowledge, the greater the rejection of abortion; and the less the knowledge, the greater the acceptance of abortion.

El presente estudio aborda la problemática del aborto en el Perú, considerado como un acto criminal y un problema sanitario debido a las consecuencias físicas y/o psíquicas no deseables que genera al binomio madre-niño, además de su reconocido impacto social, por lo que se consideró importante determinar la relación que existe entre los conocimientos y las actitudes sobre el aborto en mujeres en edad fértil. El estudio es de tipo cuantitativo, de diseño relacional, de corte trasversal. La muestra fue de 113 mujeres que asistieron al Hospital Nacional San Bartolomé entre agosto y noviembre de 2012. Para evaluar los conocimientos se aplicó un cuestionario validado mediante juicio de expertos y coeficiente biserial puntual. Para determinar la confiabilidad, se utilizó la prueba de Kuder-Richardson. Las actitudes fueron medidas con escala tipo Likert, cuya validez y confiabilidad fue determinada mediante juicio de expertos, coeficiente de correlación de Pearson y alfa de Cronbach. Los resultados muestran que existe un alto porcentaje de mujeres con “conocimientos regulares” sobre el aborto (49,6 %) y mayoritariamente con actitud de indiferencia (45 %). Al relacionar ambas variables, el estudio muestra que existe relación significativa entre ellas. Las mujeres que tienen “conocimientos deficientes” presentan mayoritariamente actitud de aceptación del aborto (46,4 %); las mujeres con “conocimientos regulares” muestran actitudes de indiferencia (41,1 %), y las mujeres con “buenos conocimientos” muestran actitudes de indiferencia (58,6 %) con tendencia al rechazo (34,5 %). Se concluye que a mayor conocimiento, mayor rechazo al aborto; y a menor conocimiento, mayor aceptación del aborto.
