Influence of breastfeeding in the prevention of overweight and obesity in children under 5 years of age.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and systematize the evidence on the influence of breastfeeding in the prevention of overweight and obesity in children under 5 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study uses a systematic review of 10 articles regarding the influence of breastfeeding on the prevention of overweight and obesity in children under 5 years of age, which were found in the following databases: Cochrane, Scielo, and Pubmed. All the articles used in this review were analyzed according to the Grade scale to determine their strength and quality of evidence. RESULTS: 100% of the reviewed articles are conclusive. However, some authors suggest conducting further studies with broader age group populations. CONCLUSIONS: Of the 10 articles reviewed, 100% (10/10) provide evidence that breastfeeding positively influences the prevention of overweight and obesity in children, as it reduces the rate at which the body gains weight during the first years of life. Therefore, it reduces the accumulation of abdominal fat, which is also a predisposing factor for obesity or overweight during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

OBJETIVO: Analizar y sistematizar las evidencias sobre la influencia de la lactancia materna en la prevención del sobrepeso y obesidad en niños menores de 5 años. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO: Éste estudia utiliza la revisión sistemática de 10 artículos acerca de la influencia de la lactancia materna en la prevención del sobrepeso y obesidad en niños menores de 5 años, los cuales fueron hallados en las siguientes bases de datos: Cochrane, Scielo y Pubmed. Todos los artículos usados en esta revisión fueron analizados según la escala Grade para determinar su fuerza y calidad de evidencia. RESULTADOS: El 100% de artículos revisados son concluyentes. Sin embargo, algunos autores sugieren realizar mayores estudios con poblaciones grupos etáreos más extensos. CONCLUSIONES: De los 10 artículos revisados, el 100% (10/10) demuestra evidencias de que la lactancia materna influye de manera positiva en la prevención del sobrepeso y la obesidad en niños dado que disminuye la velocidad del organismo de ganar peso durante los primeros años de vida, por tanto, reduce la ganancia de adiposidad en el abdomen que, al mismo tiempo, es un factor predisponente de obesidad o sobrepeso durante la infancia, adolescencia y etapa adulta
