Emotional impact of COVID-19 and work performance in the nursing staff of the intensive care unit of a hospital in Lima 2022

Abstract

This research arises from the need to highlight the emotional impact on the job performance of intensive care nursing staff during the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus. At the end of 2019, a new coronavirus causing pneumonia was identified in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization (WHO) named the causative agent Coronavirus 2, responsible for COVID-19. It quickly spread locally and then globally, plunging all countries into an unprecedented health emergency. This situation not only strained healthcare systems but also directly affected healthcare personnel, who were overwhelmed by the high demand.

Therefore, this research aims to determine the emotional impact on the job performance of nursing professionals in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is a non-experimental, descriptive, and correlational study, with a sample of 80 nurses working in critical care units. The technique employed is the survey, using self-administered questionnaires for both variables: the DASS Scale and the Job Performance Record, both statistically validated through Cronbach's alpha. Descriptive statistics will be represented through figures and tables, while inferential statistics will use Spearman's Rho.

La presente investigación surge a raíz de poder evidenciar el impacto emocional con relación al desempeño laboral del personal de enfermería de cuidados intensivos durante la pandemia afrontada por el virus SARS – CoV2 (COVID 19). A finales del año 2019, en la ciudad de Wuhan- China, se verifico un nuevo coronavirus que causo Neumonía en los pobladores de la zona. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) nombro al agente causante Coronavirus 2 causante del COVID -19; este se propago rápidamente en la zona local extendiéndose a nivel mundial sumiendo a todos los países en una emergencia sanitaria sin precedentes lo que causo un impacto no solo en el sistema de salud sino directamente se vio afectado el personal, que se vio sobrepasado por la alta demanda .Por ello la presente investigación tiene como objetivo determinar el Impacto Emocional con respecto al desempeño laboral del profesional de enfermería en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI). La investigación es no experimental, descriptiva de tipo correlacional, la muestra constituida por 80 enfermeros de las Unidades Criticas. La técnica empleada es la encuesta y los instrumentos para ambas variables es el cuestionarios autoaplicables: la ESCALA DASS y la FICHA DE DESEMPEÑO LABORAL ambas validadas estadísticamente mediante alfa de Cronbach; para la estadística descriptiva se representará por figuras y tablas y en la estadística inferencia se usará Rho de Sperman.
