Sarcopenia in surgical patients hospitalized at Hermilio Valdizán Medrano Regional Hospital - October - December, 2022

Abstract

At the hospital level, they focus on evaluating various factors that can lengthen the hospital stay of patients and even more so if it is a state hospital. According to existing studies, sarcopenia is one of the most prevalent conditions in hospitalized patients, but it is rarely evaluated at the hospital level, being detected late. Sarcopenia, as mentioned above, is a condition not only of the structure but also of the functionality of the muscle mass, and it can affect the person who suffers from it to the point of leading to disability. Compared to the indicators, there is currently a screening that evaluates the risk of presenting this. The validated SARC-F screening consists of evaluating everything from strength to the frequency of falls, to obtain a score, which will determine the presence of sarcopenia. If this condition would be detected in a timely manner, it would be an advantage in favor of health professionals, being able to optimize and treat other nutritional problems, for the general recovery of the patient. The objective of this study is to determine sarcopenia in surgical patients at the Hermilio Valdizán Medrano Regional Hospital during the months of October to December 2022, as well as determine the general characteristics, nutritional status and interpret the SARC-F screening score. After the interpretation of the data collected and analyzed, it was found that of the surgical patients hospitalized at the Hermilio Valdizán Medrano Regional Hospital, 68% present a risk of sarcopenia, are in the age group of 20 to 59 years, and with a higher prevalence are men, with a low percentage of comorbidities and in terms of nutritional status, the adult population, compared to the elderly, obtained a higher percentage of normality

A nivel hospitalario se enfocan en evaluar diversos factores que pueden alargar la estancia hospitalaria de los pacientes y más aún si se trata de un hospital del estado. Según los estudios existentes la sarcopenia es una de las afectaciones más prevalentes en los pacientes hospitalizados, pero esta es poca evaluada a nivel hospitario, siendo detectada tardíamente. La sarcopenia como se mencionó anteriormente es la afección no solo de la estructura sino también de la funcionalidad de la masa muscular, pudiendo afectar tanto a la persona que lo padece hasta llevarlo a una discapacidad. Frente a los indicadores, actualmente se cuenta con un tamizaje que evalúa el riesgo de presentar esta. El tamizaje validado SARC-F, esta consiste en evaluar desde fuerza hasta la frecuencia de caídas, para obtener un puntaje, la cual determinará la presencia de sarcopenia. Si está afectación sería detectada de manera oportuna sumaria como una ventaja a favor de los profesionales de salud, pudiendo optimizar y tratar otros problemas nutricionales, para la recuperación general del paciente. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo determinar sarcopenia en pacientes quirúrgicos en el Hospital Regional Hermilio Valdizán Medrano durante los meses de octubre a diciembre del 2022, así mismo determinar las características generales, el estado nutricional e interpretar el puntaje del tamizaje SARC-F. Posteriormente a la interpretación de los datos recolectados y analizados se encontró que los pacientes quirúrgicos hospitalizados en el Hospital Regional Hermilio Valdizán Medrano, el 68% presenta riesgo de sarcopenia, se encuentran en el grupo etareo de 20 a 59 años, y con mayor prevalencia son hombres, con un bajo porcentaje de comorbilidades y en cuento al estado nutricional la población adulta a comparación de la adulta mayor, obtuvo un mayor porcentaje de normalidad
