Knowledge and attitudes of adolescent mothers regarding newborn care at home.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of adolescent mothers' situation in relation to newborn care. It is known that these mothers will transition from being daughters to becoming mothers, and getting pregnant does not guarantee that they will reach physical and emotional maturity. Objective: To determine the relationship between the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent mothers regarding newborn care at home. Material and Method: This study is quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 71 postpartum adolescent mothers discharged from the Gyneco-Obstetrics Service at the National Teaching Hospital for Women and Children San Bartolomé between May and August 2015. To assess knowledge, a questionnaire validated through expert judgment and the binomial test was applied. The reliability was tested using the KR 20 test, and attitudes were evaluated using the Likert scale, whose validity and reliability were determined through expert judgment and Cronbach’s Alpha. Results: In evaluating the level of knowledge, 59.2% had medium knowledge, 23.9% had low knowledge, and 16.9% had high knowledge. Regarding attitudes, 56.3% exhibited indifference, 25.4% acceptance, and 18.3% rejection. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is no relationship between the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent mothers regarding newborn care, as they possess medium to low knowledge and show an indifferent attitude towards the newborn.

El presente estudio aborda la problemática de la situación de la madre adolescente frente al cuidado del recién nacido, se sabe que ellas dejaran su rol de hijas para ser madres, el haber salido embarazada no asegura que alcancen su madurez física y emocional. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre conocimientos y actitudes de las madres adolescentes para el cuidado del recién nacido en el hogar. Material y método: El estudio es de tipo cuantitativo, descriptivo, correlacional, de corte transversal, la muestra fue de 71 madres adolescentes puérperas que estaban de alta del servicio de Ginecoobstetricia del Hospital Nacional Docente Madre-Niño San Bartolomé entre mayo-agosto 2015. Para evaluar los conocimientos se aplicó el cuestionario validado mediante juicio de expertos y la prueba binomial, para su confiabilidad se utilizó la prueba de KR 20 y para las actitudes se utilizó la escala de Likert, cuya validez y confiabilidad fue determinada mediante juicio de expertos y el Alfa de Crombach. Resultados: Al evaluar el nivel de conocimientos (59.2%) tienen conocimiento medio, (23.9%) bajo y (16.9%) alto, en cuanto a su actitud 56.3% tienen una actitud de indiferencia, 25.4% de aceptación y 18.3% de rechazo. Conclusión: Se concluye que no existe relación entre los conocimientos y actitudes que tienen las madres adolescentes frente al cuidado del recién nacido, que poseen un conocimiento de medio a bajo y presentan una actitud de indiferencia hacia el recién nacido.
