Relationship between the perception of family function and dental caries index in adolescents of fourth and fifth year of secondary education of the I.E.N. 7221 Rinconada, San Juan de Miraflores in the 2021 school year.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of family functioning and the dental caries index in 4th and 5th-year secondary education adolescents at I.E.N. 7221 Rinconada, San Juan de Miraflores during the 2021 school year. Materials and Methods: A total of 101 adolescents were evaluated, to whom a questionnaire with sociodemographic questions and family environment was applied, in addition to a family APGAR consisting of 5 questions and an odontogram. The APGAR consists of 5 items on a scale from 0 to 4, giving a maximum result of 20 and a minimum of 0. The odontogram was then performed to obtain the DMFT index for each adolescent. Results: Analyzing the perception of family functioning by age and sex, significant differences were observed between both sexes (p<0.05), but no significant differences were found by age. Significant differences were found in the average DMFT index according to the perception of functionality (p<0.05), but no significant differences were observed in the average DMFT index based on the number of siblings, birth order, or with whom the adolescent lives, nor based on the caregiver's educational level. Conclusion: The perception of family functioning and the DMFT index are inversely related, meaning that as the family functioning score increases, the DMFT index decreases.

Objetivo: El propósito de este estudio fue determinar la percepción de función familiar e índice de caries dental en adolescentes de cuarto y quinto año de educación secundaria de la I.E.N. 7221 Rinconada, San Juan de Miraflores en el año escolar 2021. Material y Métodos: Se evaluó un total de 101 adolescentes, a quienes se aplicó un cuestionario con preguntas sociodemográficas y entorno familiar además de un APGAR familiar que consta de 5 preguntas y un odontograma. El APGAR consta de 5 ítems en escala de 0 a 4, dando un resultado máximo de 20 y mínimo de 0; posteriormente, se realizó el odontograma para obtener el índice CPOD de cada adolescente. Resultados: Analizando la percepción de funcionamiento familiar según edad y sexo se observan diferencias significativas entre ambos sexos (p<0.05), pero no se observan diferencias significativas según la edad. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en el índice CPOD promedio según la percepción de funcionalidad (P<0.05), pero no se observaron diferencias significativas en el índice CPOD promedio según el número de hermanos, el orden de nacimiento ni tampoco con relación a con quien vive ni según el grado de instrucción de cuidador. Conclusión: La percepción de función familiar y el índice CPOD se relacionan inversamente, es decir que a medida que se incrementa la puntuación en la escala de funcionamiento familiar disminuye el índice CPOD.
